Caraline ('kärəˌlēn)

Caraline is the native tongue of Caralis, a beautiful tech-savvy planet of The Freeholds. Sentences spoken aloud sound surprisingly melodic considering the languages' liberal use of guttural sounds. Linguists attribute this to the wide range of inflections used to help convey meanings when speaking.
Writing in Caraline has been adapted to use two different alphabets, the traditional alphabet dating back to the early history of the language, and a slightly larger modern alphabet based upon the characters used in Legionese. While both are still taught in Caralis schools the new alphabet has been gaining favor, largely because its letters are more closely mapped with phonetic pronunciation. While interplanetary communications have switched completely to writing in the new alphabet, the aesthetics of the traditional alphabet remain more popular with the arts and entertainment industries.
