Vaelis Arin

Scope

The motivation behind building Vaelis Arin

What is this project?

Vaelis Arin is a love project to interactive media, to my land, to my readers and supporters. It's also a way of growing my person as creative by trying new methods of sharing my content. For this and more, the first thing I'd like to say is that this world is going to be a slow-growing project as the last thing I wish to do is to rush content.

What you'll read in this meta?

In this page (Foundation), you'll find out-of-the-world information about the project (also known as meta information), in the next page (Scene) you'll find out information more related to the worldbuilding itself but might include soft spoilers, so be warned.

The last page (Literature) is about the inspirations that fuel this project of mine. Just imagine it says "Inspirations" instead of "Literature", there are a few limits to the meta page and I've already broken it a lot.

How does this world works?

The objective of this world is to take the reader to an adventure as someone who found themselves in a strange world and they are learning how to live and going out on adventures. This involves having some sort of linear progression, a bit like the main quest of a videogame or a TTRPG

This linear progression will be shown at the bottom of the articles in a "previous/next" article box (you can also find it at the bottom this article to go to the next section, Scene, or back here when you are in there).

This pagination will also show either the starting article (also known as intro article) or it's parent article (the "main" article from where the optional article you are reading comes from) in the center.

You'll be able to see a list of all the "main" articles in the category "Main Story".

"Optional" articles are planned to only be listed under their main story article instead of the category to avoid overwhelm.

Formatting notes

By the way! Green boxes like this one will always be sharing meta information!

Meanwhile, brown boxes like this one will have small snippets of prose. This one is an exception to the rule to show you the rule.

Article blocks that are in gray-scale mean that they are stubs and, while they might or not be published, they are in list to be written and expanded. You can leave a comment on them (if they are published) to let me know you are interested in them!

In comparison, coloured article blocks are published written articles that, at most, should only get a bit of extra lore.

Gray-scale articles, once written, will send out a notification to everyone following the world.

Notifications for new content

While I don't want to rush content, I also don't want it to delay me for months, so some articles might look complete but might get extra lore as time goes on (such as, for example, new NPCs for an organization or settlement). I will not be notifying to the general public about them, but you can join the following subscriber* group to get notifications about it:

Join the New Snippets club

*Joining a subscriber group automatically makes you follow the world it is from. This world will be using them fairly often.
Content warnings

The world is focused to be cosy and warm, but I don't believe in a perfectly good world and so, in rare occasions, there might be some harsh stuff mentioned implicitly. In necessary occassions, you'll see boxes saying "Content Warnings" that you decide whether to open or not.

This decision of making you pick whether or not to read the content warnings comes from a couple studies I've read recently. These claimed that content warnings aren't useful and sometimes even harmful, but I still believe in precaution being better than healing, so I want to give you the option.

In case you find some articles (or sections) that you believe it needs a content warning but it does not have it, first of all, I'm so sorry; and second, please leave a comment on that article letting me know so I can fix that ASAP.

Side menu

If you look at the bottom left of your screen (bottom right if you are on a phone), you'll see a button with a closed scroll (lovely icon made by TJ Trewin btw). If you click on it, it will open a pop-up (which can be closed by clicking the icon again). In this pop-up, you'll find:

  • Start your journey: A link to the introduction article.
  • Recent articles: The 5 last written (or major updated) articles.
  • Latest update: The last thing that has been added or changed that's not a full article or a major udate. It will include meta things (like info added in the meta, small updates (that people with the "New Snippets" role will get a notification for), and other things like some CSS or new shenanigans.
  • Follow button: Will say "thank you" if you already follow the world, otherwise, I fully recommend you click follow. If you are logged out of World Anvil, neither of these will appear.
  • Follow your story: It will open a small box with a list of all the articles that are considered main story.
Other shenanigans
  • Log in/out: Top left of the screen, only in computers (sorry, phone users, but it's annoying to work with phone's CSS). If you click on it, it will either send you to the log-in page or log you out your account. Stole the idea from TJ Trewin.
  • Follow: Top left, next to log in/out, only in computers (sorry again, phone users). Will only appear if you are logged in. If you already follow the world, it'll show a thank you message.
  • Back to top: This is added by World Anvil instead of myself actually. Bottom left of the screen (bottom right if you are on phone). If you are in computer and see empty space next to it, it's cuz when you are logged in, there's an accessibility button in that "empty space".
  • Side menu: Bottom left (or right if on phone), talked about it in the previous section.
  • WA: Bottom left (or right if on phone). Sends you to World Anvil dashboard (which might be different pages whether you are logged in or out).
  • Back to homepage: Top right. Sends you to the world's homepage. Simple. There's a back to homepage button added by World Anvil, but this one is custom cuz I like to make life harder to myself or something like that.
  • Search: Top right (left if on phone). Let's you search up articles if you know their name. It's made by World Anvil.
  • Pagination: A small box at the bottom of each article (and meta pages) that will show you what to read next or what is the previous content. It will also show (sometimes) the introduction article and if it has a parent article (parent articles appear when the content is "side content" instead of "main story".
Interactivity (and achievements!)

One main objective I have with this world is making it as interactive as I can. With is a bit of a struggle with World Anvil limitations but it also has a bunch of cool things to do for community, such as subscriber groups and subscriber content, discussion boars (I got half a plan for them!), and other things.

Some of these interactivity things are small "choose your path" parts (such as you can see at the very start of Wake up!!) which will mostly influcence little to this world. These things will be based on an honesty system as I have not "blocked" the other paths when you open one of them.

Another thing I've planned are achievements! In some articles, you'll find white boxes that, if you click on them, you'll get the achievement!

A third thing planned is to add a bit of a skill system, where you'll get more skills while reading optional articles. And sometimes, when you are picking "choose your path" or reading other things, you'll need at least X levels in certain skill to be able to read it! That's a bit harder to implement and I need some basics before doing it, so it will take a bit for me to start implementing the locked parts.

Both the skills and achievements you'll be able to see in your Journal, both the ones you got and the ones still to get (at least with the achievements, still gotta implement the skill system). It will also have secret content that only people supporting my work with Ko-fi will have access too.
