Stepan Character in Up&Down | World Anvil

Stepan

Hyperactive whippersnapper. Officer #3 of Unit 37-42.

Early Life

Stepan has been part of the Legion since birth. As such, he didn't spend much time with his parents - and in fact even less than the average Legion child. His father was strangely absent. The explanation for this was trivial at the time: he had been the result of a one-night-stand that involved a soldier from the Provisional Units. It became more complicated when said soldier was unexpectedly promoted to a General.   By then, Stepan was just old enough to somewhat understand the drama that broke out when his mother tried to improve her status and rank by using him as leverage. She claimed that she should also be more than just a simple soldier by virtue of being the mother of the General's child. The General, while not denying the affair, didn't share the sentiment. Neither did Lord Armageddon when the issue ended up on her desk. Stepan's mother eventually gave up on her idea, especially when she became the target of scorn and ridicule from her peers.

Adolescence

Luckily for Stepan himself, he was rather removed from the whole ordeal, due to living with his unit instead of his parent. He did not escape at least a certain amount of bullying because of it, though. It turned him into a rather acrimonious teen who finds it hard to trust anyone, even nowadays. He occasionally met his father when their units met, but they never exchanged more than a few words, and even those were just commands.   When he was 16, one of the officers of Stepan's unit died in combat. He had been aspiring to become someone more important, but didn't get any chances to previously. On a whim, even if he didn't think he'd have any chance at actually making it, he filed an application for becoming the dead officer's successor.   Much to everyone's surprise, Stepan was actually granted the promotion. Gossip has it that a "higher instance" had a hand in it. He had no real clue how to be an officer, but just played along. Fake it 'til you make it. He outlived the unit's current chief, and wasn't a big fan of Snare becoming the next chief since he had never gotten along well with that guy. Together with the other officers, Tanner and Asura, Stepan made it his mission to criticize and judge every heartbeat of their new chief.

Current Circumstances

Despite being in cahoots with each other, the other officers always treated Stepan like an annoying kid, instead of showing him the amount of respect he in his own opinion is entitled to. The chief isn't any different. A trend that Snare started is calling him "Stepánka" instead of his actual name, which irritates the officer greatly; he loves using nicknames for everyone (including himself), but the one Snare gave him is, in his opinion, not an acceptable one.   The problem with antagonizing Stepan is that he tends to take out his frustrations on the soldiers of his unit. They have learned to spot the early signs of him looking for trouble, and try to avoid or minimize contact whenever he seems in a bad mood. This helps them escape unnecessary bullying.   Ultimately, Stepan's goal is to become a General, even though he isn't sure yet how to get that far. He has been sort-of conspiring with the other officers of his unit to get rid of Snare at least, but since Asura's death, those plans have stagnated (since she was the "mastermind" behind them).
