Elf

Homeward Bound

"Humans measure time in years. Elves measure it in promises kept."
— Entaris Itar, personal journal
Elves are a graceful and long-lived people whose civilizations have flourished for millennia. Their lives unfold on a timescale that few other races can truly comprehend, allowing them to cultivate arts, scholarship, and traditions with extraordinary patience. To an elf, the passing of a century may feel no more remarkable than a season does to a human.   Slender in build and refined in appearance, elves are immediately recognizable by their pointed ears, sharp features, and eyes that often seem older than their youthful faces suggest. Age leaves little mark upon them until the final years of their lives, giving many elves an ageless appearance that has inspired myths of immortality among shorter-lived peoples.   Elven settlements are built in harmony with their surroundings rather than in defiance of them. Forest kingdoms wind gracefully between ancient trees, coastal cities rise from white cliffs overlooking the sea, and hidden enclaves disappear almost entirely into the landscape. Rather than reshaping nature to suit their needs, elves prefer to build as though they were invited guests.   Art is woven into nearly every aspect of elven life. Music accompanies labor, architecture is expected to inspire as well as shelter, and even ordinary tools are crafted with careful attention to beauty. To an elf, mastery is measured not by speed or efficiency, but by the quiet satisfaction of creating something worthy of enduring for generations.   Their long lives shape every relationship they form. Friendships grow slowly but often last centuries. Grudges can endure just as long. An insult that another race might forget within a year may remain vivid in an elf's memory long after kingdoms have risen and fallen. Patience allows forgiveness, but it also allows resentment.   Many elves devote decades to a single pursuit before moving on to another. A renowned swordmaster may later become a celebrated painter, then spend a century studying astronomy before returning to martial practice. Such changes are viewed as natural expressions of curiosity rather than signs of indecision.   Other races often mistake elven reserve for arrogance. While some elves certainly believe their civilization superior, many simply struggle to form deep attachments with people whose entire lives pass in what feels to them like a brief chapter. Even so, those who earn an elf's trust often gain a companion whose loyalty spans generations.   Among elves, memories are treasured as carefully as heirlooms. Songs preserve history more faithfully than monuments, and stories told beneath ancient boughs may have been first spoken by ancestors who still sit among their descendants, adding details only eyewitnesses could remember.
