Genie

Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
A genie is any of a variety of outsiders that are native to either of the four elemental planes that are also comprised of a soul. Genies are created when a mortal soul reaches its afterlife in the elemental planes rather than the outer planes, a rare occurrence, and are known to interbreed with humans, giving birth to genasi. Genies are famous for their strength, guile, and skill with illusion magic.

Genie Magic

All genies have a number of inherent magical abilities, and a few among them also also practice regular arcane spellcasting, much like a sorcerer. They create peculiar magic items and employ a number of specialized spells that are, as of the Ervenian Era, irreplicable. Most scholars agree that genies in fact use weird magic, but this classification is still somewhat contested.

Bound Genies

Over half of all genies are capable of granting wishes; the spell known by wizards and sorcerers as “wish” is named after the genies’ ability. Due to this, many kings, merchants, warlords, spellcasters, and other powerful individuals have sought, and still do, to bind genies to their will. Bound genies are usually trapped in a magical vessel or device.   A bound genie is a bitter being; coerced into servitude, kept away from their habitat, and isolated from their community, all genies in this state resent their captor. It is possible to release a bound genie by destroying its confining vessel, by making a wish, or by asking for a miracle; other methods prove ineffective, for unknown reasons. Generally speaking, a released genie will be extremely grateful to whoever set them free.
