Brugstad
Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Brugstad is a city in Gontal, formerly the capital of Pavastaal. The city is considered to be an architectural and mechanical marvel, and one of the prime examples of fire giant craftsmanship. Contrary to popular belief, it is completely unrelated to the adjacent Blightspire.
Architecture
The city is built above a valley, and is supported by 12 massive square pillars, their side dozens of meters wide, and vary in height from 103 to 219 meters. Above them there's stone slab, hollowed out into an arched form and supported by stilts and counterweights, which forms the city's primary surface.
Brugstad can only be accessed from two bridges, one to the north and one to the west. Before the slab was built, the city was an L shaped bridge with a rectangular portion at the corner; this area is now the city's central district, also known as the old district, houses its government building, its market, its smithies and forges, but has no residential buildings.
The pillars are made of stone and steel, with a complex self-adjusting mechanism that allows them to maintain their height; their height difference accounts for the valley's uneven terrain, and is carefully calibrated to keep the city completely level, with the exception of the sloped drainage system in the city's streets.
The expansion of the city from its original shape, which includes 10 of the pillars, the pillars' mechanisms, and the slab, was built by fire giants, specially comissioned for Brugstad's tricentennial celebration. These giants, who were allied with the red dragon Ertekis, were all slain by the silver dragoness Azolnasmir.
