Successive Magic Physical / Metaphysical Law in The Mortal Lands | World Anvil

Successive Magic

One of the Facets of Magic that permeate the Mortal Lands, Successive Magic, more commonly known as 'Mage Magic' is born from within its wielder rather than from an outside source. The magic was first discovered by the Good Witch Perenelle in the late Marble era, but was refined over the following decades until it became the Magic used commonly by Mages today.

Structure

Where External Magic is generated and used via means outside the Caster, Successive Magic draws from an internal wellspring. This means both that the caster can only use a certain amount of magic per day, and that only certain individuals are able to use this magic. The exact 'trigger' that gives a person the ability to use magic has not yet been discovered, although it is very common for the magic to follow family lines. The Goodvich Family, for example, is one of the oldest known families of Magic, tracing their lineage back to the Good Witch herself. That being said they are not the best case study for how a particular 'school' of magic flows down family lines, as their family tree is soaked with all of its aspects.   Taking other noted cases into consideration, it has been observed that if a parent tends towards elemental magic, then the progeny is like to as well. Much as how physical traits are passed down family lines, magic traits are as well. Certain circles believe that 'pairing' the right mages together will result in more powerful children, or more inclined to a particular element. This is not an exact science, as many times the resulting progeny has no ability to use magic at all.   There are Very Rare cases in which a mage is born with control over a magic that is does not correlate to any of the known schools. That these rare cases are often born into poverty, or are born out of wedlock is an interesting fact, but at this time is not correlated with their status as Very Dangerous.

Usage and Training

While a Mage is born with their wellspring from birth, it is usually not until the age of eight that their ability to use such magic manifests, although particularly strong magic lines can manifest as early as the toddler years. Once a mage begins to develop their magic, they are enrolled either in a special training program sponsored by the Keepers of the Oath, or with a private tutor. Magic, by the laws of science, is considered an energy. One with a very strong desire to move, at that. If left untended for more than a few weeks, the wellspring within the caster can begin to cause damage to both their physical body and their mental state. Mages are trained as soon as they are enrolled to responsibly and correctly regulate their magic usage in order to prevent long-term damage.   While all Mages are capable of using all Schools of Magic to an extent, they will naturally gravitate towards one particular school. This will be the primary focus of their magical education, although they will receive cursory training in all schools, as well as the normal subjects of the modern educational programs, sciences, mathematics, and letters.   Upon reaching the end of their training, Mages will undertake their Oath Ceremony upon which they will be certified as fully trained Mages. Each Mage upon their commencement receives a small grey box and a signet ring. While the uneducated believe that the signet ring is the formal sign of a Certified Mage, it is actually the Grey Box, their most important tool in the field. The box is lined on its interior with Mystm's Bane alloy, a metal known for its ability to repel magic. The boxes are used to contain Wizard artifacts, as Each Mage swears as a part of their commencement to ensure that the dark legacy of Wizards will not taint the bright future to come.   How a Mage uses their magic, for the most part, is up to them; as long as they uphold their Oaths and do not break any of the Kingdom's laws they are free to operate how they see fit. As such, and because of stringent training, Mages are rarely stripped of their status and banned from using magic. It happens, rarely, upon which their Oath is rescinded and their Grey box is reforged into a Mystm's Bane Cuff, bound to their ankle preventing the use of magic save for proper maintenance.    While many Mages dedicate their careers to using their magic for the good of all, just as many use it merely as a tool in other careers, such as archeology or politics.

Manifestation

Successive Magic manifests through the caster, either through their hands or an implement they wield. A soft glow often but not always accompanies the use of magic, its color indicative of the school of magic used. Healing magic, for example, will manifest a strong green/gold aura around the wounded.
