Crystalized Source Material in The Mortal Lands | World Anvil

Crystalized Source

We didn't know what to make of it, at first... It looked like ice, but didn't melt in our hands. It glowed, the color of magic and mist It wasn't until Christopher's anxiety finally relaxed that we realized   We were standing on a Source.
Sources have long mystified the modern scientists of the Mortal Lands. The ancient techniques of the Abaisi who once oversaw and safeguarded these wellsprings had been lost in the dawn of Wizards. So it was quite the discovery indeed when explorers found a Source that had seemingly phased into the rock around it, changing its makeup and infusing it with magic.
This discovery almost brought the Eastern Seaboard to war when Cailar's interest in the rock as a power source clashed with the The Keepers of The Oath 's mission to prevent the misuse of magic. Cailar at once established dominion over the solitary isle and its sisters, creating a colonial outpost to mine the rock and the Isles' other resources. It was not until the Night of Falling Crowns when the yoke of Cailar was forcibly removed and the Source was returned to a state of preservation.

Properties

Material Characteristics

the Crystal Source could easily be mistaken for a glacier-in fact, it was for several centuries until a lost group of explorers stumbled upon its cave seeking shelter from a storm. opaque, but not completely clear, with a tint of icy blue running up and down its ridges. It even felt like ice, except for the fact it didn't melt in one's hand like a icy treat on a summer day.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Crystal Source is not the Source itself-rather, it is a mineral that managed to somehow exist within the source, becoming infused with its magic over time. It glows with a soft, icy blue light from within, no matter how small or large the shard. If the magic is extracted from the mineral, this glow fades and the shard turns into a dull blue rock.

Geology & Geography

The Crystal Source has only been found in one location-the Isles of Maenkes, on the far western edge of the Mortal Lands. The northernmost isle, to be precise. Researchers speculate that it's possible for other Crystal Sources to form or exist in the Mortal Lands, but so far only one has been found.

Origin & Source

Crystal Source is the result of a Source residing within an ore deposit for centuries upon end. Which is baffling, considering all other Sources to this point have existed in clearings or oases above the ground. This discovery puts forth the question of how many Sources truly exist in the world, out of reach of normal men.

Law & Regulation

Crystalized Source, due to being magic made form, is highly regulated by the command of the Keepers of the Oath. So far it has only been used for research, to better understand magic and how it moves. A few experiments have been done to try and use it as a power source, but so far no attempts made have been able to regulate the magic that washes out of the rock. Any other attempts to use the rock as a replacement for Mages are forcibly shut down.

Discovery

Crystal Source was discovered by a group of explorers seeking shelter from a storm while on an expedition on the northern most isle of Maenkes. The Source rejuvenated the mage that was traveling with the party, allowing him to use his magic to help the party survive. When they returned to Cailar, news of this mysterious rock set the scientific community on fire. It was soon discovered that the ore could be used as a power source, separate from Mages.
