After a short-but-luminous career in Kirival's burgeoning Flickerpic industry, Grey Winter Morning finds salary negotiations don't go as expected when he is beaten senseless, dumped into a crate which is then nailed shut, and loaded into the belly of a freighter bound for Bailymena.

Miraculously, he survives the trip, although he is on Death's door when he is discovered by an adolescent Arabet, who is treasure-hunting amongst lots of unclaimed freight. Arabet saves his life, and as he nurses the newly-renamed Mr. Stitch back to health, a friendship grows.
