Master Arabet (a.k.a. 'Bet)

Arabet of Copperpenny Row is -- or was -- an independent thief of some renown in Bailymena. He's known for consummate professionalism, cussed stubbornness, and the ability to do the impossible. He's lately been required to join the Thieves' Guild, which he's finding a tough fit. Please, don't ask about his scar.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Slender, dynamic build. Looks like a musician or dancer.

Body Features

Arabet wears a dark coat with deep pockets. He keeps himself trim and fit and neat at all times.

Facial Features

Massive scar from right temple to cheekbone to jawline. Result of a misadventure with a "warforged" mechannai, that Arabet refers to as the "Buster" job.

Identifying Characteristics

Short hair. Once wore a beard, but became too identifiable, so he trimmed it down.

Personal history

Born the only child of Melinde of the House d'Arabette. His mother immigrated from Beruges, Estimonde to Bailymena, Skodia before Arabet was born. No longer affiliated with his mother's establishment, Arabet worked for the crime boss, Thrasher, as an independent, "off-book" thief. Selected by Thrasher to hold the Lost Acre, Arabet has been nothing but unpredictable, disappearing for months at a time to manage the affairs of his comrades, the Rapscallions of Bailymena. Arabet has lived a tough life, making his way on the streets of Bailymena. Originally content to be a "boatman," specializing in the theft of goods from the cargo holds of the many vessels importing and exporting goods from the isle of Skodia and Bailymena, its biggest city, Arabet has his eyes on the Dream Job: the robbing of an Imperial Quartermaster Ship, actually, the Imperial Pay ship, a unique, one-of-a-kind vessel. Unfortunately, Arabet has found a fondness for his newly acquired friends and compatriots, especially his ex-girlfriend, Delilah, her new boyfriend, the swordsman Shakir, and his long-standing mate, financier and fence, Locke Calder. Of course, none of these people are what they seem on the surface and Arabet's life has been complicated with oogey-boogey magical happenings ever since getting involved with these people.

Male. Again, Arabet doesn't care about how others express their gender, he is pretty assured of his own identity.

A heterosexual male who was raised in a whorehouse, Arabet doesn't shy from other expressions of sexuality. It has been a while since he was romantically involved with another human being.

Raised to be a doorman and musician of the Piano Forte for Melinde's house of iniquity, from childhood.

Failures & Embarrassments

  • The Buster Job: wears the scar on his face as a daily reminder of his failure on his first big job.
  • The Loss of Delilah: connected to the Buster Job, Arabet lost his first chance at true love.
  • The Disappearance of Timothe: Arabet lost his apprentice, who simply wandered-off between worlds and never returned. Arabet is cut-up about this.

Mental Trauma

  • Beaten frequently by his "trainers" from an early age, Arabet sets his mind beneath a veneer of gruff anger at the world, and most especially, his mother, for allowing it to happen.
  • Broken-up about the loss of Stitch, Arabet has not had time to mourn the loss of his best friend, who left their shared abode in the middle of the night.
  • Saddened by the return of Delilah, his first true love. She is, of course, with another man. A bigger, tougher, man whom he respects against his will.
  • Further distraught by the loss of his apprentice, Timothe, whom he loved like the son he will never have.
  • Wishes that his friends, Narri and Zivah Hullu were not victimized by the Violet Vicomtesse. Saddened by the death of their mother, the siblings have disappeared and disbanded from the syndicate they had formed.
  • Arabet has hardened his heart as a response, and has designs to force the rest of his Bailymena connections from his endangered emotional state.

  • A genius, Arabet is a deep-thinker and analyst, who has a distaste for magical effects that don't benefit him directly. Especially transformative magicks.
  • A risk-taker, Arabet only needs to see the possibility of success to trust in that success. Success to him means relying on the tested skills of his own self and those of his compatriots.

Motivation

Once upon a time, the motivation of Arabet was simple avarice. But technically, that was never true. Arabet was just bored. Born extremely intelligent and offered a mundane life, Arabet has chosen always chosen otherwise. Simply put, Arabet tests himself. Arabet's other motivation, hidden even from his self-analysis, is not to be alone. He doesn't want to be alone.

Melinde D'Arabette (and Georges): mother and her partner Thrasher: crime boss and mentor of Arabet and an evil, cruel, hobgoblin. Mumbles, Clarice, the bardic troublemaker that Arabet has chosen to take over his mother's parlour. Clarice and Arabet have history. Magma, the famous ex-gladiatrix, who used to live at Rapscallions Manor and was the original muscle of the Rapscallions. Stitch, the Tabaxi healer who was the better-half of Arabet's street persona for a long time. Zivah Hullu, the Funerist, who lost everything but the clothes on her back to the machinations of the Violet Vicomtesse. Zivah was Arabet's closest friend before the return of Delilah. Narri Hullu, the Lawyer, who disappeared after the Dream Job to wander the world in his own way. Narri hired Arabet to provide "criminal insights" and they had a good working partnership. Locke Calder, also Khaladur, who is full of surprises and is not at all what he seems on the outside of his public persona. Locke is perhaps Arabet's most trusted friend. Timothe, Arabet's apprentice, missing in the Dream somewhere in time. Tim was Arabet's closest friend and ally after the disappearance of Stitch. Delilah, is the angel of Arabet's youthful heart. He loved Delilah way more than he cares to admit. Now, they are happy friends in unhappy times. Trust seems to have been reciprocated and there seems to be a mutual respect. Shakir, the Akkodian Swordsman, is the newest associate of Arabet's and comes with Delilah's blessing, which makes Arabet envious. Arabet has a grudging respect for the swordsman, who outclasses Arabet handily with a weapon.

Family Ties

Melinde D'Arabette is his mother. His biological father is Georges D'Arabette. But Arabet never knew Georges as his dad.

Religious Views

Fucking Cathy and Vic have royally buggered Bailymena up. The place is a mess that anyone who isn't in a tower can see. Other than that, relatively agnostic, despite having been in the presence of dragons, fae-lords, angels, and more.
