Dragonstone Material in Tellanor | World Anvil

Dragonstone

Dragonstone is a rare luminous ore that is found in mountains somewhere. Its lambent glow is gentle and soft. It is popular among the wealthy, explorers and adventurers, who all prize the ore for its unobtrusive illumination. It is found most commonly in the northern mountains. Its name is due to the fact it was once only found among the treasure hoards of dragons.

Appearance & Physical Properties

Dragonstone, in its natural state, is found in conglomerate rock formations. Like most stones, it is hard. and has a hexagonal crystalline structure. The stone glows gently, its hue varying from vein to vein. Dragonstone polishes well, and continues to shed its light even when ground into dust. Dragonstone, once removed from the ground, retains its light for between five hundred and a thousand years.

Trade & Market

Due to its rarity, dragonstone commands a high price. The mining of dragonstone is an almost entirely Tamard industry, but the stone can be found in ancient caches of treasure that are unearthed by explorers or adventurers. Dragonstone dust is valued as a tool for marking creatures or objects, as the dust's glow continues as long as a stone's. The gentle luminescence is markedly different from the harsher brightness of flame. While dragonstone is expensive, it is more affordable than glowing magicite, and safer to work with. It is not uncommon for the wealthy of Tellanor to festoon their entertaining areas and bedrooms with dragonstone. The light of a dragonstone does not dull, however, so the utility of this decoration is somewhat questionable when it comes to matters of sleep.

Laws & Regulations

Dragonstone fetches a rather hefty price, and this has resulted in desperate people risking their lives. Miners and purveyors of dragonstone are required to have a license from the Tellan Guild of Prospectors & Miners to legally trade or sell unworked dragonstone. The exception is those who find dragonstone among ruins or the belongings of a woe-befallen traveler. Such individuals, however, are only legally able to sell their dragonstones to the Fidiran Adventurer's Guild. The exact wording of the law allows people to circumvent this by trading dragonstone for goods and/or services.
