Humans

Written by White Rook

Kiambe told me today that when humans were first created, Nasan was chosen as their king because he exemplified what it meant to be human. When I asked him what that meant, he smiled and told me that to be human is to be constantly tempted to do great or terrible things, and Nasan was tempted most of all.   --5th of Steel, Year 6

Civilization and Culture

History

Humans are the most numerous of the races on the Forge Council, and the shortest living. Most follow the religion called the Orthodox Nasinite Church, who worship the first human king of the immortal age called Nasan, as a divine being from whom all humans are descended. Humans are split into three subraces: Old Ones, Nasanos, and the Deepmen. Old Ones- The last ex immortals of the humans, now all very old and dying. Out of the humans on the Forge Council, most are Old Ones. Some even remember the days of King Nasan before the first Thanixian War, and actively support his worship and serve as heads of the Orthodox Nasinite Church.   Nasanos- Those humans born after Death in the city. Make up the majority of the middle class in The City of Stadupglod. They have darker skin and hair than the Deepmen, and are on average taller. Many serve as soldiers in the Dwarven based army of the Stoneguard, but they can be found in nearly every profession and at every level of society. Humans also make up most of the human based religions, of which the Orthodox Nasinite Church is the only legal one and the largest. The second largest human religion is the Neo Nasinite Church, who also worship Nasan, but do not believe Deepmen humans share his descendancy nor do they follow the same religious rites as the Orthodox Nasinites, who have outlawed them. The third largest is the Abilite Cult, who worship Nasan’s brother Abily as the true divine being from which all humans descend, who resisted temptation and became king while his brother fell. The Cult is ruthlessly suppressed by both the Orthodox Nasinite laws, but also in Neo Nasinite communities who drive them out or report them to the Custos for arrest. The smallest of the human religions is the Thanixos, a small radical sect who worship the Thanixian currently ravaging the Material Realm, believing it to be Nasan, who has become all powerful and all knowing. They are the most feared of the human religions, hunted ruthlessly by even the Quenmithal.   Deepmen- Those humans born after Death outside the city in the Oldroads or the Undercity. They have pale skin, milky eyes, and are generally shorter than the average Nasanos. They exist in scattered clans that can be ruled by chiefs, warlords, or powerful shaman that worship divine forms of the animals and beasts that live in the Oldroads, often times adopting a mutually beneficial relationship with them. Many Deepmen communities also live among Minotaur clans, traveling, foraging, and hunting together. Interbreeding is very common in these situations. Within Stadupglod, Deepmen are concidered to be a dangerous lesser form of human, and so cannot own property or work legally within the city. They are often used as illegal slaves by many of the rich and powerful, however.
