Red Maine Legion
Flame of Pride, Sword of the Realm.
Overview
The Red Maine Legion is the elite martial order and pride of the Kingdom of Espen, widely regarded as one of the most formidable fighting forces in the known world. Equal parts knightly brotherhood, military unit, and national symbol, the Red Maine represents the peak of martial excellence and serves as both a deterrent to Espen’s enemies and a rallying banner for its people.
Nobility is not required to join—only unshakable discipline, peerless martial talent, and the means to procure the sophisticated equipment necessary to serve. For many, being chosen for the Red Maine is considered a higher honor than any noble title.
Origins and Founding
The Legion was founded in 1094 AF by Queen Isabella the Huntress, a monarch whose reign was marked by expansion, militarization, and the forging of Espen’s warrior identity. Originally formed as a cadre of battlefield champions to support Espen’s cavalry-dominated army, the Red Maine evolved over centuries into its own fearsome branch of the military.
The name Red Maine is drawn from the image of the great war lions once bred in the plains of southern Tairn—an animal sacred to Espen’s martial traditions. Their crimson manes became the symbol of both pride and wrath, emblazoned on the Legion’s standards and ceremonial capes.
Traditional Armament and Evolution
Historically, Red Maine knights were massive, ironclad warriors. In the days before the Burn, each knight rode into battle in three-horse-drawn chariots, wielding towering full-body scutum shields and two-handed greatswords or battle axes. Their thick, ceremonial armor was so impenetrable that these knights were said to walk unscathed through volleys of arrows and flaming pitch.
In modern times, the Red Maine has undergone a dramatic transformation. Their ancestral plate armor has been alchemically enhanced—now lighter and far more resilient. Internal artifice rotors and exo-motors enhance the wearer’s speed, reflexes, and strength. The Red Maine knights are no longer bound by the need for chariots or beasts—they move faster and strike harder than cavalry, leaping great distances and coordinating assaults with terrifying precision.
Their signature weapons are now alchemically charged swords, superheated through internal batteries, capable of slicing through enemy armor like parchment. Each knight wears a closed helm with integrated communication systems, allowing squads to remain in constant silent coordination, even across chaotic battlefields.
Recruitment and Status
To become a member of the Red Maine is to enter legend. Recruits are selected from Espen’s military academies and through elite tournament circuits across the kingdom. Only one in one hundred applicants is accepted, and even fewer survive the multi-year training and alchemical conditioning process.
Applicants must either afford or be sponsored for the immense cost of their armor, weaponry, and training. Many noble families consider it a rite of passage to fund a family member’s attempt to join. For commoners of sufficient skill, merit sponsorships from dukes, guilds, or even the royal court may be granted.
The title Knight-Brother (or Sister) of the Red Maine carries not only martial clout but immense political and social weight. A knight of the Legion walks with deference from all classes of society and is often consulted in matters of strategy, statecraft, and internal security.
Tactics and Battlefield Role
A unit of Red Maine knights can turn the tide of an entire war. Though rarely deployed in large numbers, when they are, their appearance alone sends shudders through opposing ranks.
The Legion specializes in:
- Shock Assault: Breaking enemy lines through sudden and overwhelming force.
- Siege Breaking: Cutting through enemy barricades and fortifications.
- Target Elimination: Executing coordinated strikes against key battlefield threats (commanders, artillery, etc.)
- Wartime Ceremonial Guard: Serving as the personal guard of the monarch or royal heirs in times of crisis.
Current Role and Numbers
Following the Burn and the collapse of Espen’s vast population, the Red Maine Legion has been reduced to a core of approximately 300 active knights—a fraction of its former strength, but still a force capable of devastating results. This elite cadre continues to train and operate under direct command from the crown, though it answers only to the King or Queen in matters of deployment.
King Felipe I, himself a knight of the Red Maine, has begun reforms to rebuild and modernize the Legion, funding new armories and reinforcing the southern provinces to bolster recruitment.
Legacy and Symbolism
The Red Maine is not merely a military force—it is Espen’s beating heart of honor and resilience. Their crimson-crested helms and roaring lion banners are seen as symbols of enduring pride, even in Espen’s hardest hours. Songs, poetry, and tapestries across the kingdom celebrate their deeds. Festivals honoring historical battles always feature Red Maine reenactments.
Though many fear the decline of Espen’s global power, the Red Maine remains a reminder that strength does not fade—it waits.
Red be the crest, gold be the heart—where the Legion walks, kingdoms part.
