Eric Lau
Eric Lau is a Taruan veteran from The Second Armada and acts as a hired bodyguard to Kallone. While he often reminds Kallone that he is a paid hand, their relationship goes deeper than first meets the eye. Before they had a working relationship, Eric had already saved Kallone's life twice. Kallone cannot help but wonder how Eric Lau happened to be where he was needed, and confesses to him that is suspicious that Eric Lau may not be entirely what he seems to be.
Eric Lau is a main character in the spin off visual novel, Sand. He has a connection with Lo Chen which may be discovered through playing the story.
Eric is very proud of his Taruan heritage, and recites Taruan Songs and Taruan Poetry much to Kallone's displeasure.
"In Bev we call it Bunting." Joshua said as he poked the campfire with a rod. "When someone talks loudly about who they are, it's because they are hiding something."
Eric Lau's dark eyes mirrored the blazing fire in front of him. He gently laughed and looked straight to Joshua. "What do you think I'm hiding then?"
Joshua looked towards Kallone who was fast asleep. Satisfied, he matched Eric's gaze. "You go on about being a bodyguard, and being Taruan. I've learned so much about your Taruan culture, that I may as well have read a book."
Eric Lau laughed again and raised his head, away from the fire, towards the night sky. "You're a smart kid, I'll give you that. The truth to the matter is... I'm in love. Have you ever known what that is?"
Joshua shrugged. "It's not my kind of thing."
"It wasn't mine either. I thought I was a cold person, capable of changing the tides. I even challenged the mighty Lo Chen." Eric shook his head. "But actually, I was very, very angry. Love, or the loss of it, makes one do stupid things."
"This is a stupid place to be." Joshua and Eric shared a smile and a small chuckle. "So you are here because of love?"
"Of course. I chase love as its the only thing that keeps me from... Well. There's a reason why you're here right? Your people are against making money, so you want something."
Joshua nodded. "Medicine. For my sister."
"Love. See?"
"I guess you're right. But what about..."
"I am adopted." Eric Lau shrugged. "Even Kallone doesn't know. My biological parents were Taruan, but my adopted parents were Feds. They died by the Cantari. You... Probably don't know the Cantari. Don't worry about it, kid. I am still Taruan, through and through. You should get some sleep."
Joshua murmured a protest.
"Trust the stupid bodyguard. Truly, I have too much to think on for sleep. You give it a go and tell me how it went."
Joshua sighed and thanked Eric, before falling asleep on the blanket.
