Yathin

After riding for days down the river, my raft eventually came to shore at the base of Yathin. I had heard there was a place on the river, but many said to beware. They weren't as kind to strangers as they seemed on the outside. I have found nothing but sincere hospitality as of yet.

Yathin is a small village in the south of the Carrow Swamp. It was first founded by a group of families moving south form Carn Town after being exiled from its boundaries. The people of Yathin prefer to keep to themselves and have a reputation of being hostile to many outsiders, though it doesn't seem so at first.

Description

The land in Yathin is very wet, with large portions covered by small lakes coming from the nearby river. As a result all of the buildings and pathways are raised by wooden posts above the water line. Most of the buildings are made of wood to ensure that resources can be easily found from the nearby forest should they get damaged.
Being a small village, much of Yathin's lands are filled with residential housing first. There are two main buildings for travellers, one for general goods, and the other being the local tavern. Flying from house to house and colourful banners and bunting, a celebration of living in the darkness of the swamp. Many of these banners are hand crafted from Cotton grown in the raised agricultural fields that the village has started to develop.

History

Founding

In 739 AR, three families were exiled from Carn Town for their intense dedication to a figure they called The Swaming Dread. These families, the Ellthorn, Elderbren, and Gallast, each became the founding members of Yathin, a sanctuary for their faith and culture away from the scorn of Carn Town and its leadership.
The lands where Yathin stands were chosen because of a great swarm of insects that guided Darrick Elderbren and his children to the lands. Seeing this as a sign from The Swaming Dread, the families started to construct houses from the nearby wood. Each of the family members would hang an insignia as a holy symbol to The Swarming Dread, showing their belief in them.

Expansion

Over the past 16 years, people have joined the Yathin commune. Either as outsiders with a strong faith in The Swarming Dread, or by being tested by the current families there. Most of the members were invited in due to their faith, these members often brought new supplies, a guide from their patron deity.
The increasing population of the village led to a problem, dwindling food supplies. By 745 AR there was barely enough food to go around the mouths that were there. To resolve this crisis, two villagers snuck back into Carn Town to report on their ability to grow crops. In doing so, the village was able to start growing their own crops using the help of divine magic, allowing them to feed themselves more consistently.

Vibrant Welcoming

There is a great celebration whenever someone comes to visit Yathin, many of the families within the village gather together at the local tavern, the Riverspoke Inn, and welcome the stranger with free food and drinks for the evening. During this celebration, great dances arise, with many of those in the village taking part and enjoying the festivities.
The visitor is often hailed as "Fresh Blood" during the course of this ceremony. Often they are given a sash of a deep crimson red and a crown made of a blackened wood.

Name Pronouns Description
Darrick Elderbren He/Him Human Leader of Yathin. While all three families came to found Yathin equally, the Elderbren were considered special due to Darrick being guided to the location of the village by a swam of Delthricks. Darrick seems kind and warm to those who visit, often being the first to buy them drinks and food in the tavern. He is also the village pastor, guiding them in the texts of Vu-Dras as they perform ancient holy rites.
Ol' Bartock Ellthorn He/Him Human Protector of Yathin. The patriarch of the Ellthron family, Bartock is a stocky human who has made an oath to protect the village from harm. While not outfitted with a mass of armor or wearponrt, Bartock is skilled at using simple tools to a lethal force. While often this is animals and other creatures that try and attack the village, if a new arrival is hostile, they will find Bartock to bring them down a peg.
Tylassa Gallast She/Her Half-Elf Healer. Since the founding of Yathin, the Gallast family has helped provide aid to those around them. While they cannot provide divine healing, many among the family have learned to heal through simple means. As the matriarch of the Gallast, Tylassa is among the most skilled Healers, having helped heal people since her father helped found the village. She is kind and motherly, with a vast array of antidotes and materials in her home to tend to those in need.
Gan Bolith He/Him Firbolg Farmer. Inducted into the village in 742 AR, Gan has been an active member of the farming community, using his affinity for natural magic to help crops to grow each day. In doing so, he left a swarm of Locusts to destroy their current harvest.
