Akkratso Incense

The smoke filled the room, the scent of lavender and roses thick in my nostrils. It was beautiful. Inhaling the effervescence showed me visions of home. I apparently spent the time of the incense burning asleep, disturbing the ceremony occassionally with my snoring. To this day, I can still remember the powerful vision the time showed me, a memory of my parents and I spending time in our rose garden. It is

Akkratso Incense is a deep purple incense that is commonly used across the Dolvalyn Sovereignty as part of religious ceremonies dedicated to Dream Shaper. The Incense is known for providing potent dreams and smelling like a strong memory. In recent years, less potent variations of the incense has become part of a drug trade for the high it provides.

Description

Often Akkratso Incense is in the form of a deep purple stick that contains 3 portions of the incense. When burnt using a direct flame, the sticks burn and emits a thick smoke that fades to lilac. When inhaled, the incense brings forth an emotionally powerful memory: the smell of a parent's home growing up, or the meal eaten while being imprisoned and tortured. These smells are meant to portent the dreams invoked by the incense.

Usage

Akkratso Incense is most commonly used during a religious communion with the Dream Shaper. It causes an individual who inhales the incense to fall asleep. The incense is said to allow a person an intense recall of the events of the dream, regardless of their normal sense of recollection. Additionally, the incense seems to provide a vision of the future, some portent of fate itself. Akkratso Incense was most commonly used by seers and oracles along the Sovereignty who find used it to enhance their visions and, where possible, get a clearer vision of future events.
In its less potent form, Akkratso Incense primarily heightens the senses before making an individual tired. These heightened senses allows a person to see and hear things from a futher distance. Some have still reported finding themselves filled with a mass of hallucinations that were in some forms prophetic. It is unclear if this is because those individuals have an eye for prophecy and storytelling, or if these diluted forms still contain the same power as the concentrated incense. Once the effects of the incense starts to wear off, the user finds themselves getting slowly tired, exhausting themselves, leading to many users falling asleep after inhaling the incense.

History

The first recorded use of Akkratso Incense was during The Shatter. A champion of the Dream Lord used the incense to connect with their deity after he seemingly abandoned the mortal realms. The champion claimed the new weapon they received was a sign of the dreams the incense allowed him to touch, especially with the Dream Lord's help
In the early years of the Age of Restoration, it was believed that the last of the Akkratso Incense had been destroyed, leaving many disconnected to their ancient faith. By 284 AR, twenty portions of Akkratso Incense were found deep in ancient Arvadian ruins just outside of Tyvalin. This lead many to believe that the last of the incense was only to be found in the ancient ruins. These twenty portions were taken by the Dolvalyn Sovereignty to enhance their religious belief and seers. To this day the Sovereignty actively search out more Akkratso Incense to use as part of their cultural heritage.
In 737 AR, a group of adventurers working for the Ossalimarian Empire discovered a set of Akkratso Incense. Since this, less potent versions of the incense have become a recreational substance throughout the Empire, becoming known as "Dream Dust". The effects were recreated by a member of the Veritas Convention studying under Lord Cara'loth Mooreland. This secret trade has gained the ire of the Sovereignty believing the secret trade is diluting the abilities of the true Incense.

I like the idea of a scent resurfacing memories. It's a powerful real life emotion that is not used quite often in writing. Great article!

Always interesting when something with religious significance becomes also part of an illicit trade. Smells are so important.

Its really fun to look at the two different parts of it, something rare and also abundant at the same time.
