Pilla (a.k.a Angry Falcon Familiar)
(pee'-lah), , is a natural-born banded-feather falcon who became a familiar to a Naulor Druid, Tamuril. Pilla is aggressive and extremely protective of her modest companion, a sentinel on constant alert for threats to her Druid. She is capable of loud, piercing shrieks that hurt the ears and has extremely sharp talons and beak.
Background
Pilla was born in a scrape on the side of a cliff, without a name, and as a natural falcon of the wilderness. As a chick with two siblings, she was protected and tended by her mother and enjoyed many meals brought by her father. Fortunate enough to avoid becoming a meal themselves, she and her siblings soon became a fledgling testing their flight.
For two full years afterward, Pilla managed to avoid the many hazards and predators while learning to hunt and becoming a predator herself. She also migrated to a milder climate to avoid the harsh winters in the West Mountains, returning the next year during the summer.
When she was nearly three years old, Pilla returned to the mountains of her birth to look for a life mate. She found one, although the soul with whom she bonded for life was very different from herself.
Current
A falcon's awareness of time may reside only in the changing of the seasons, yet Pilla has already lived twice as long as her siblings from the nest. Although they and their own chicks are long dead, the Druid's familiar is still in good health.
Pilla knows when Tamuril is hungry, content, or distressed, and the falcon can communicate in her natural language to the Druid who understands her. She also understands her Druid's varied methods of showing affection but welcomes them only when she believes they are safe.
The falcon familiar's aggression toward most "two-legged" figures is easily provoked and sustained. Pilla does not express any overt magical effects, but her long life, incredible vigilance, and extended endurance in flight or attack might be assumed to come from her life-bond with the Naulor Druid.
Pilla does not hesitate to rake the softest flesh of those who would mean them harm.
