Kurn Divigna

Kurn Divigna

Kurn Divigna

(kern dih-vig'-nah), , is a Ma'ab Human born to the well-off Guild Caste of Ennikar, called the "Second Flesh" within the capital. The Guild Caste is unquestioningly operated by Ma'ab women; their purpose is to source materials and conduct the critical trade and accounting to support the city and military of Ennikar.

Kurn is a brutish but typical example of his people, taller and stronger than most Humans. Being born Ma'ab and male alongside intense training through his youth and adulthood to become a fighter in the army (and thus joining the Bone Caste of Ennikar), he weighs three times that of the women of his breed. Kurn has black hair, black irises, extremely white skin, and is beardless with minimal body hair.

Background

As a child under his mother's civil authority, Kurn carried her respected name, Gushram, although they maintained a contentious relationship. At age fourteen, he learned who must have sired him during an argument which had escalated, when he was left in shock to learn he'd been conceived during a military practice for which Yupa Gushram had volunteered.

She'd been in need of a child and had been in the right place at the right time to entice such a prestigious team and trainer into the life ritual.

"I should be in Bone Caste!" he roared. "How could you? You must fix it! I am already seven years behind the rest!"

"You were not meant to be Bone Caste!" the petite, morbid-looking woman snarled back. "You never shall be! You are Flesh, Kurn, and you will Weave until you die and return to the Ascended! Only then will you discover what reward you have earned!"

For the first time in his life, he knew he wanted to hit her so hard, she would never get up again.

His mother would be proven right, however, because the Eternal Hellhound's name was not on record as his real sire. The name was one of the others there who had taken his turn as well, now Bone Caste but once Weaver as well.

How could the Artisan's Archives get it so wrong? Did they not take his blood when he was still wet from the womb? He'd been cheated! Forced to work in Gushram's Weavers Guild, supporting the Bone Caste indirectly when he should have been transferred to the military by the age of seven.

"It's not fair," he told Castis in secret, shaking with rage, his heart pounding in his chest. "It's wrong. She's wrong!"

The first-tier noble listened with sympathy, mourning with him an entire lifetime denied and stolen away. They were both of the Flesh Caste, though the youth two years younger was clearly of the magic-studying Blood Caste as well.

The rules made it barely acceptable that they speak to each other. Nonetheless, Castis always seemed to find him when the guild lad had something he needed to tell someone.

He also always came back with unusual ideas of his own.

"I think I know a way," Castis said with a small, mischievous smile, "to force your mother to acknowledge who your real sire is. Publicly, on record."

Kurn swallowed, staring with wide, desperate eyes. "Tell me."

Current

Kurn's best friend of the Flesh, Castis Orlien, had gotten him into the Bone Caste by age fifteen. Yupa's rage was impotent, her self-serving trickery dispelled before the eyes of the Archives, and Kurn left with righteous pride to train as a direct part of the great Army of the Ascended.

This was right. This was his heritage, where he should have been from the beginning, where he belonged. He only had to catch up in the training, but he was plenty big and strong. He was determined. With the blood flowing through his veins, there was no way he could fail.

Two years later, he sneaked out of the barracks and back into the Flesh enclaves. This outrageous disobedience was not to visit his mother. He couldn't strike her, couldn't lay a hand on her for what she'd done, but he never had to see her again.

He sneaked in and lost a little sleep to visit Castis. To tell him how it was going.

"It's harder than I thought," he said honestly. "But I've made it through basics."

The Blood mage's pale face flushed with pride. "Of course, you did. I knew you would. What's next?"

"Weapons." Kurn grinned, showing a gap where a tooth had been knocked out and hadn't regrown yet. "Then terrain and survival. Should take another year."

"Will you be ready to try for the Hellhounds by then?"

Kurn's neck bruises bothered him when he grimaced. "Not yet. Teams comes before that."

Castis's fine, groomed brows lifted without showing a wrinkle on his brow. "Teams? What is that?"

His sore mouth twisted into a leer as Kurn turned to watch his friend's expression when he said it. "Breeding. You know, when we push into other lands, take over towns and cities. Like when my mother volunteered to help them practice and conceived me? That's Teams."

The sheltered noble gasped, his eyes flew wide, and his breath shook as he looked away. "Oh, by the Vermillion Lady…uh…wow."

Kurn sneered, feeling much more confident now as he watched the smaller male imagine the same things he had when he'd been told what to look forward to.

The exact same things.
