Dagger Coast | Lost Waves

Dagger Coast

This is the name of the stretch of coast along northern Irasis, along the eastern side of the continent. The very north of it is an icy area with mostly city-state strongholds known as the Nightlands. At the most southern end lies the Baratox Conglomerate and its impressive mountain cities.

Geography

The mountainous southern parts of the coast have very few good harbours. Only the industrious Conglomorate have managed to build artificial ones to accommodate any vessels larger than small fishing boats. The cliffs are jagged and treacherous, which is what has given the area its name. Even under the sea, there are enough "daggers" to have ripped through the hull of many a careless ship. This has made it home to many pirates active in the nearby seas at they can often get away from pursuers less used to navigating the waters. The local population is very watchful for pirates for this reason and are generally hostile to outsiders by default.   The Greyfall Mountains aren't as close to the coast further north, but there are still plenty of jagged rocks under the water. These new underwater dangers are often made out of obsidian rather than granite and might result from long-since dead volcanoes. The sea here is home to many bizarre creatures that can't be found anywhere else on Ailion - a significant number of which are extremely dangerous.

Ecosystem

The marine life is vibrant and varied along all of the Dagger Coast, but it becomes more dangerous and less lucrative the further north one gets. The areas just outside the larger Baratox Conglomerate cities are often disturbed by the amount of activity, and this drives away some fish.   The Greyfall Mountains are quite inhospitable for most things but still home to some hardened small trees and bushes as well as its own linage of mountain goats. There are also plenty of more dangerous creatures, including many bears, and it isn't recommended to wander too far unarmed.

Localized Phenomena

The very far north, known as the Nightlands is dotted with several Magic Nexuses of different kinds, making magic unpredictable to those who aren't very familiar with the local variation.

History

The coast has been populated several times, judging by the various findings there. Most settlements seem to have disappeared for no reason. The most recent such event has been dated to around the time of the Second Breaking, while the oldest might date all the way to the Dawn War.
