When choosing his name upon becoming a samurai, he wanted to honor his parents extreme efforts to keep him alive when he was born. His father trudged through a blizzard to fetch the doctor. Thus he chose 幸 Yuki (the first part of his personal name which means fortunate), a homonym of the word for snow 雪.
