Extra Stout Purification
In their line of duty, Guardians face many dangers and often come into contact with the most stubborn impurities, like disasters, plagues, and death. In order to be at their best, they need to be purified often from kegare, spirits of uncleanness, death and disease. These spirits devour their host's positive energy. Over time, this can be deadly. They spread easily and if left unchecked, can infect entire communities.
Physical and Spiritual Cleansing
Purification ranges from simple every day acts to arranging for a priest to perform a ceremony for you or your location. (I'll provide a few examples from my research, but it may be best to consult with your local Shinto priest for exact details of the ritual needed.) Elements in purification often include water, fire, a pole with a set of paper tassels (called an Oonusa), and salt.Extra Stout Purification
Before missions that will throw League members into the most impure aspects, or after if they could not foresee coming into contact with them, they will request the strongest of cleansing ceremonies. First, the ceremony attendee will be instructed to wash and then soak in an ice cold bath. Next, they'll get their blood flowing with a run to a nearby waterfall. The participant will stand under the waterfall while chanting a specific verse. (This reporter was unable to discover the exact wording. Soujou-bou's glare kept her from prying further. League secrets?) The attending priest will check for any remaining kegare. If the unclean spirits persist in hanging onto their host, the priest will perform a special ceremony, called Mizu Harae. The priest will wade into the water near the waterfall and chant while waving a rod with special paper streamers over the participant. Afterward, the ceremony participant will likely need to be warmed up to avoid hypothermia. How Long Does It Last?
It depends. How soon will a Guardian go into a crazy situation that will put them around death, major disease outbreaks, and the like? Sure there are talismans and wards that help. But one can't always tell if they're carrying Kegare. Most Guardian consider constant purification rituals as just part of the job. To keep those they care about safe, they won't risk polluting others.Work in Progress

Everyday Acts of Purification
Beyond the "extra stout" cleansings, Guardians are expected to comply with common sense aspects to keep their homes and themselves reasonably free from kegare. Soujou-bou described a few of them in one of his latest missives to the League, reminding all that even though they are short staffed these rituals need to be maintained.Ensure your space, things, and yourself are tidy and clean. Not only do you need to be ready in a moment's notice, you represent the League. Our reputation must be spotless. Ritually rinse your hands and mouth with water in the provided fountain area before visiting a shrine or temple. You know better than to bring kegare into the presence of the Kami and the people around you. The only exception I can allow is if lives are in immediate danger. Then you will rinse your hands and mouth after and have the area purified. Sprinkle water in front of your house morning and evening and sweep there each morning. If you are unable to complete these tasks, hire someone to do them.
I love that this is written from the POV of a reporter who couldn't get all the details. Really adds to the article.
