Scope
The motivation behind building Jerna's Diary
Jerna's Diary is built for fun and a hobby, as all of my worlds are. One day I may publish novels or short stories, or both, but for now this is purely a recreational activity for me.
My world is motivated by memories. My earliest "worldbuilding" memories are in the form of dragon art, when I drew my own dragon species as a kid. I was obsessed with designing new dragon species, and continues to this day. I'm so happy to say that my little drawings I made as a kid have turned into an entire world.
The goal of the project
For me, I want to feel satisfied. I want to feel satisfied that I have organised years of random art and writings into a fully fleshed out world. It's not there yet, but it is something I am constantly working on.
I want my audience to feel curious. I want readers to read an article and think "huh, this is interesting, let me read more". I don't think I am there yet, but again, I am working on it.
Jerna's Diary's Unique Selling point
The uniqueness of my world comes in the form of all of my species. I am a huge fan of the living world, designing my own forms of very well known mythological creatures, but twisting them slightly and making each dragon feel unique.
Theme
Genre
Jerna's Diary is a science fantasy world, leaning much more towards science. The technology level is not an even spread; just a handful of cities are technologically advanced, and most settlements and civilisations are fairly primitive.
Reader Experience
Readers should feel intrigued when reading. They shouldn't feel scared, although it is welcome if they're reading about a particularly terrifying dragon species. Most of my world is quite light, but there are some dark aspects to it that I haven't written much about yet.
Reader Tone
My world is somewhere in the middle between dark and bright, leaning towards bright. The islands and continents are all colourful locations, but there are certainly places one should not visit, as it is very dangerous.
Recurring Themes
1. No matter where you are, you could probably die
2. Try all the food, because it's probably delicious
3. Don't jump in random holes in the ground
Character Agency
My main character, Jerna, has the power to change the world. She has, actually, but nobody aside from her knows it.
Focus
Dragon species. It's a whole family of reptiles, and the cultures of the planet revolve around them, they're kind of important.
The cultures of the world. I struggle to write about cultures, but it's something I want to improve writing and this is the best place to start.
Technology. I also struggle writing technology, and since it's fairly important this is a good place to start.
Drama
Jerna was hired by the People's Association, a massive organisation outside of the world of Dracosei, where Jerna's Diary takes place. The People's Association studies every sapient species in the Yonderverse, and Jerna was hired to study a new species, mutonins.
Eradication of the mutonin species. Mutonins were slowly taking over the planet, destroying it in the process. Jerna's experience with mutonins lead her to being hired, and she managed to kill off the entire species and save her planet, unbeknownst to everybody else in the world.
