War of the Depths Military Conflict in Jerna's Diary | World Anvil

War of the Depths

Occurring almost a hundred years ago, the War of the Depths was a long conflict that lasted almost 3 years.

The Conflict

Prelude

1899 was the year the Odorae moved into the caves that are now known as the Darrowspar Depths. These large cave systems provided a safe refuge for the Odorae, from the dragons, plants, and the land above. Six months later, the charmen moved into a neighbouring cave system and formed the Valinspar Depths. Being the first settlement living underground and developing safe systems of living, they felt like they were the superior settlement. When the Valinspar Depths started to develop faster than the Darrowspar Depths, with access to rarer resources, the Darrowspar Depths were offended and tried to slow down their development. The only way they knew how was to set alight the settlement.   Before they could do this though, a fire was started within the Valinspar Depths by an unknown person, but suspected to be Aria Marosk who runs the Dragon Harmony Association. The Valinspar Depths immediately declared war on the Darrowspar depths, to which they responded in kind.

Battlefield

There were 7 major fights, 3 of them taking place in the tunnels connecting the two settlements and the other 4 taking place above ground. The first battle took place within the tunnels, and was the most brutal battle.   The tunnels are very cramped, even I don't particularly like walking through them if I can't be bothered to follow the paths above ground to the other settlements. 6 miles of tight, wet tunnels isn't exactly my first choice. Anyways, the battles took place in this very tunnel that takes you to and from the Darrowspar and Valinspar Depths, and it must've been uncomfortable for them. The battle saw the deaths of 150 Valinspar soldiers and 300 Darrowspar soldiers. With 3/4 of the Valinspar soldiers dead, it wasn't looking good.

Outcome

The war only stopped in 1905 when the leader of the Larrenspar Depths, who had kept quiet, spoke up and demanded peace. According to documents, the leader had a proposal that benefited both the Darrowspar Depth and the Valinspar Depths, yet the public was barred from this information, including me for some reason. Apparently this proposal was so well thought out that it is still in place today, and is the reason for no issues between the Depths since. One can wonder what the proposal was that was so effective, and I'm determined to find out.

Strengths

The Darrowspar Depths are the oldest of the three Depths settlements, and have the largest military even though they were only three years into living in the caves. Their settlement was closest to the surface, so if they needed to evacuate after an invasion, it would take the least amount of time.
The Valinspar Depths had slightly more advanced technology, so were better equipped to fighting. They had access to more resources than the Darrowspare Depths, as well.

Casualties

This settlement suffered the most, losing over half of their army, as well as 40 citizens.
The Valinspar Depths lost about 200 soldiers, as well as 94 citizens.

Objectives

As the first settlement to establish themselves underground, the Darrowspar Depths always had dominance issues. As soon as the Valinspar Depths started to develop faster than the Darrowspar Depth, they had a problem with this. Their goal was to simply slow down their development, but unfortunately this broke out into war.
The Valinspar Depths were developing as a settlement faster than the Darrowspar Depths, and they had a problem with it. The Darrowspar Depths attemped to stop them, but this lead to war and then the Valinspar Depths defending themselves.
