Pufaa Species in Iphars | World Anvil

Pufaa

Iphars is being reworked! Please bear with me!

I'm so glad they survived the crashing of worlds although they look a bit different... Missed these silly beans.
— A Melgent

The Pufaa are panther-like creatures with glowy golden fur that marks where their bones are under their black fur. They are friendly cretures that will only attack when threatened and used to live near crystals clusters in caves in Ashtara.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They are big quadrupedal animals with black and golden fur. Their black bodies display golden marks on the fur that follow where the bones are under the fur and meat and glow in low light or darkness. Their eyes, whiskers, and claws (which are retractable) are golden as well. Their ears are round and short, and their tails long and fluffy.

Genetics and Reproduction

Pufaa reproduce all year long, with cycles of around 50 days which lead to a 5 day heat in females. Gestation will last around 90 days (almost 5 months) and the female will birth a litter of 2 to 4 cubs. A female will not be able to give birth for a year so that her body can recover.

Growth Rate & Stages

  • Cub: cubs are born with their eyes closed (which their mother will open carefully with licks after 2 days) and have long and thicker fur with no golden marks.
  • Puberty: after one year, their fur starts to display the golden marks and know how to survive on their own but will stay with their mother for 3 to 5 months more.
  • Adult: fully grown, they will leave their mother and start a family of their own.

    Ashtara

In Ashtara they used to live in caves, near crystal clusters. Their golden colours would change to match the crystal cluster they born near to. They would aliment themselves with small roedents and special moss that would grow on the crystals, some even believe they ate some of the crystals too. Usually, one would not be able to see a Pufaa living near a crystal of different colour than itself but special cases have been seen.

    Habitat

They live around the Golden scar in a big community and do not go too far from it.

    Diet

They do not seem to hunt even though their sharp teeth would mark them as carnivores. They instead eat from the flowers and drink the liquid from the Golden scar.

    Friendly

The Pufaa are very friendly creatures and are used to Melgent. With Ipharians, they either confused them as Melgent or saw them as inoffensive so they never were aggressive with them and even got close to the Therik compasses's exploration teams with the curiosity of a children. They have followed and slept with the teams many times but would go back to the Golden scar after a day of travel away from it.

Love this species :) Its nice sometimes to stumble upon an article about a peaceful animal! I love how much detail you gave into this summercamp article, with precise numbers detailing height, weight, and how many cubs they may have at once. Lovely concept, lovely article!

So glad you liked it! I'm a bit of a nerd, specially in biology, so I love to write about all the details I can think off. Usually I research about the most similar animal to the creature I am about to write and spend too much time there but SC didn't give me that time. I once spent a week researching and two days writing xD

Your writing process is very interesting! I don't do much research myself, but I certainly feel it is something I should do more of. I think you being a bit of a nerd definitely pays off with your articles! :)

What a bunch of glowing cutie pies! I was wondering how they hunted seeing that the glow in the dark, but you answered that already (although, there's still the mouse hunting to consider).

The mouse hunting? Is that a method of hunting or simply how they hunt mouse?
