Laa & Lada'dada: The Twin Demons

"Please, no. Help me."
A pair of demons residing in Carpenter Canyon, Laa and Lada'dada were encountered by Sven Fernsby and Heavy as the inciting event of Almost Like Love. (This article contains spoilers for Almost Like Love)

APPEARANCE

The twins were a sight both anachronistic to modern Aelayeron yet no less striking than they would've been during the Roaring Silence. Given their generally humanoid shape, along with wearing clothing, the demons were likely a part of the Third Scourge's generation. As typical of their kind, the twins were grotesque amalgamations of various living beings accented by the face of an unnamed xotili woman. To those of the Faith, she would be most known under the moniker of "Ohpah'Ohpah'Ohpah," as the oldest illustrations of the original demon would transcribe this name upon her halo.   Laa & Lada'dada were tall, wiry and rippled with cords of muscle. A notable feature of the twins was their ability to fly granted by a pair of massive, leathery wings. Along with heads resembling crocodiles, they were a prime example of what made demons demonic.

Namesake/Leitmotif: "(They Long To Be) Close To You" by The Carpenters
Species
Age
At least 900 years old
Children
Height
222cm/7'3
Weight
124kg/273lbs.
It was as if a normal man were stretched to twice his height. Hands continued where ankles ceased. Broad folds of waxen skin hung over the thing's shoulders as a loose cape. The brick-red of a ragged waistcloth flowed as the only respite against the creature's body.
Worst of all was its head. A crocodilian snout protruded from a thatch of pale hair. Atop the thing's skull was the upturned face of a woman; as if someone welded a human and this monster at their backs. Motion brought his attention to a second creature: an awful, identical twin.

Behavior

Without thought, without reason, a demon will pursue no other course of action other than the extinction of humanity. At least, that's what has been purported throughout all of Aelayeron's history. So why then would Laa & Lada'dada not only be found all the way in Tosenza, far from the main portion of the High Wall, but be content to merely dwell within Carpenter Canyon centuries after the Roaring Silence? Perhaps out of morbid fascination or merely boredom, the twins would occupy their time with the area's wildlife rather than actively hunt for humans.
"On the second day, a malevolence came from the dark. A demon, coventing the light of Man."
— The Book of Qurilius 3:1

History

In 1865, Heavy and Sven would travel through Carpenter Canyon on their journey through Aelayeron. After days without encountering any sign of other travelers on a supposedly busy trail, the two would happen upon the mangled corpse of an aventine bear. Getting a bad feeling, the two move on and make camp later that night, only to hear the screams of frightened women and wolves in the distance. Unable to ignore a person in need, Sven would rush into the woods and encounter not women fearing for their lives, but monsters utterly unlike anything ever imagined.
The pair silently dug their hands into the wolves: tearing flesh, snapping bones, and crushing all underhand into a pulp. Neither seemed to ingest anything. After enough time handling something, they would simply pick a new part and repeat the process, as if to be meticulous. Throughout it all, the only noise came from corpses undergoing the transformation into unrecognizable.
Although he tried to flee, Sven would end up trapped beneath the shielding of his sanctus armatura as the creatures attempted to crush him. All hope seemed lost until Heavy arrived brandishing the man's pistol. Firing off two shots, Heavy managed to pin each monster for the brief moment required to slash them apart with the miracle Saint Priscilla's Blade.

Abilities

Vocal Imitation: The twins could use their crocodilian mouths to produce a perfect mimicry of human speech. Although limited to pleas for help, they were nonetheless indistinguishable to both Heavy and Sven; assumedly this ability was used to lure in humans or anything else curious enough to investigate such cries.   Grotesque Strength: The twin demons were able to tear flesh and snap bones with little effort.   Illogical Physiology: Laa & Lada'dada displayed a horrific amount of durability. When under the effect of a spell which caused tree roots to rip them apart from the inside, neither seemed particularly bothered by the effect. Not only did they remain focused on Heavy and did not stop their attempts to reach him, but showed little signs of even registering the damage upon their bodies.

Author's Notes

Special thanks to Nincho | Ayonerra for the illustration of these two (Y'all should check out the work she and her husband do over at Ayonerra).   These two monsters are a super old design of mine and predate Ikwento by many years. As such, I always felt it was fitting to name them after a song near and dear to my heart; a tune my mother would sing to me as a child.

Croc Gals!   Oo I didn't know the crocodile mouth was the one that spoke. Creepy. I quite like their designs and excerpts from the story really paint a vivid picture of their uncanny nature.
