Libra Profession in Huggleland | World Anvil

Libra

More Libra candidates come from here than anywhere else AND we have more candidates that become Libras. We even had TWO Master Libras that were born here. I changed the diapers of the last one!
~Arbil Retsam
Being a Libra means representing, not only the crown, but the very core of what Huggleland is meant to be. To be a Libra means dedicating your life to the greater good. There is no room for anything outside of being a Libra. Once you become a Libra, you stay a Libra, until you die a Libra.

Expectations and Duties

On the surface, the primary role of a Libra, is that of a recorder. Libras travel the land carefully documenting what they see and experience a long the way. They use this documentation to create a report to be sent back to the Master Libra.

All reports must include:

  • Overall effort local government shows to uphold the core values of the kingdom
  • Specific examples of local propaganda; along with its positive or negative impact on the subject matter
  • Average citizen compliance levels with laws and regulations
  • Level of cleanliness of streets, buildings, and citizens
  • Education levels and areas of study available
  • Levels of economic disparity
  • Any citizens needing further investigation

Libras are expected to observe and record. They are not meant to make corrections or take any actions for or against anyone or anything they are observing. Libras are expected to set an example at all times. They should be well educated, have many talents, and be able to adapt to any situation they find themselves in. They may only dress using government issued wardrobe and must carry their identification with them at all times. All family ties must be severed once a Libra accepts the position. Libras may not form bonds or relationships of any kind, with romance in particular, being strictly forbidden. They must be 100% dedicated to their job and nothing else. Libras are expected to travel to every city in their assigned region, as well as report to Harmony, at least 4 times a year. They may not have any outside hobbies, unless approved by the Master Libra, as a means to bring them closer to the ideology of the Kingdom.

Benefits and Pay

Libras receive two monthly allowances based on the region they are are assigned. One to cover basic needs and the other to spend in the places they visit to make sure they don't hurt the economy with their stay. They have little other use for money as they receive several benefits.
  • Government issued wardrobe adapted to the environment being traveled to as well as Harmony
  • Automatic access granted to travel across borders and checkpoints
  • Priority for a place to rest in locations they travel to
  • A place of residence in Harmony
  • Free goods and services within the walls of Harmony
  • Free Medical when available, reimbursement for any paid medical
  • One attempt at resurrection when needed
  • Mandatory rest in Harmony for 2 weeks, twice a year
  • A final rights of the highest honor if/when your life runs its course.
  • A feeling of fulfillment, that only serving the crown can give you.

Becoming Libra

There are 5 Libra Positions and 1 Master Libra Position. Positions become open only when a Libra is removed, dies, or is promoted to Master Libra. When this happens, the word is sent out for candidates to gather in Harmony within the month. At the end of the month, The Master Libra, and a group of advisors of their choosing, interivew and test potential candidates.

Requirements

There is no age minimum or maximum.
Candidates cannot be married, pregnant, or have children
Life history must be submitted for review
All candidates must travel to Harmony as a normal person without special assistance. They must document their journey for review.
Candidates must bring a mock report on their home town
Must pass an extensive psychological/morality test conducted by the Master Libra
Must create a mock report on an assigned person and place based on resources in the local archives.

Preparation to become a Libra needs to start as early as possible. Some villages help train a child from birth while others look for high aptitude that can be nurtured first. There is no limit on how many candidates can apply to be a Libra. From the smallest village, to the largest city, everyone takes pride in sending off their best Libra candidates. All Candidates stay in an assigned dormitory and live together while they are being considered. Candidates can be dismissed at any time during the process for any reason. Once down to the final two candidates, the Master Libra tests the abilities and talents of both in a public display of aptitude and Libra spirit. After all the tests, trials, and events, one lucky person takes the "Oath of the Libra" and all its honor and glory. Everyone else goes home empty handed and often filled with shame. Candidates can only apply twice in a lifetime.

End Game for Libras

Once a Libra is in position, there are three paths to walk down.

Becoming the best Libra

If and when the Master Libra position opens. The other five Libras are considered for filling that position. The Libra considered to be "of the highest shown ability" is selected by the Royal Council to become the new Master Libra.

Libra for Life

Sometimes a Master Libra position never opens up or a Libra is never selected to be promoted. There is no shame in this. A Libra on this path will simply stay until they die of sickness, old age, or unfortunate accident.

Failure

If a Libra is deemed unfit to continue they will be dismissed. Once dismissed and stripped of all Libra titles and benefits they are sent away from Harmony for The Scale to take care of them.
