Elisa Goodwright in Fairweather | World Anvil

Elisa Goodwright

Miss Goodwright's knowledge of devices is certainly impressive, but her ability to remain completely unflustered when all of Hell is breaking loose around her is the stuff of legend.

Charles Scott, Investigation Report, 1881

Elisa Goodwright is an example of Lord Tufton's initiative to locate women of exceptional talent and bring them into the Service. Her understanding of arcane mechanisms has proven to be of considerable use, particularly in this time of rapidly advancing science. Miss Goodwright has also demonstrated considerable courage and ingenuity in the course of her numerous adventures as an Investigator.   Out of all of her fine characteristics, perhaps the most welcome, at least within the Research Division, is her meticulous nature when writing reports. Virtually no detail goes unmentioned, which has earned her great praise, as well as the absolute devotion of the researchers.

History

Elisa Goodwright's father and uncles are all watchmakers and clock makers of some note. Almost as soon as she could hold the tools, she would sit with them and make her own clockwork toys. While they knew that it was no trade for a woman, she was also the apple of their eyes and they found it amusing to teach her how to design and construct the mechanisms.   Her future career became more clear when she found a mantel clock that had been purchased from an estate. Alone among her family, Miss Goodwright possesses a natural affinity for the arcane and she noticed a peculiar sensation when the clock would chime the hours. After dismantling the clock to examine it more closely, she was able to determine how the effect was generated. She then reconstructed several of her former toys to reproduce the phenomenon.   At the time, she was unaware that her device was causing a steady stream of pixies to pop into our world. When Ava Mellon showed up to shut down the device, she recognized Miss Goodwright's talents and recommended her for a position with the Service. Faced with no other reasonable prospects that would allow her to follow her muse, Miss Goodwright accepted and became an artificer. Within a year in that role, she had proved herself to be brave and intrepid twice in the field. As a result, she was transferred to the Investigation Section, where she has distinguished herself admirably.
