Doctor Bones in Fairweather | World Anvil

Doctor Bones

While doing some research in the old city of Jerusalem, I returned to the hospice and was startled to find a well-dressed man sitting in my room. My concern increased when he looked up and I realized that he was wearing a skull mask. To my amazement, he bade me to sit with him and he brought forth a bottle of cognac and a glass. For the next two hours we were engrossed in the most remarkable conversation. It was only after he left that I realized that I had divulged both the purpose and the results of my research without any intention of doing so.

Phineas Barr, Archivist

Doctor Bones is an arcane practitioner of the top tier. Even among that society, he is considered enigmatic and little is known of the nature of his research or capabilities, except that he has remarkable abilities .

History

The origins of Doctor Bones are completely unknown. He is clearly of African descent, but whether or not he was born there or in the New World is uncertain. The first record of anyone with that name comes from an order from the governor of the French Territory of Lousiana making an exception to the Code Noir that generally applied to slaves and other Negros:   "Celui qui se fait appeler Docteur Squelette n'est pas soumis au Code Noir. Lui et ses serviteurs doivent être traités avec le plus grand considération."   "The man who calls himself Doctor Bones is not subject to the Code Noir. He and his servants are to be given the greatest consideration."   It is worth noting that subsequent authorities in that region have all issued similar decrees.   Doctor Bones's original name is, of course, a mystery.

Notes

Doctor Bones adheres to the Code of Cosmic Balance, as is common among arcane practitioners of his calibre. More often than not, he takes payment in the form of information. At times, his inquiries can seem remarkably mundane. Service members are advised to be cautious in conversation with him, as even a question that appears benign upon the surface might actually be part of a complex transaction that isn't apparent until after the conversation is concluded.   Service members are also advised that while Doctor Bones is courteous in the extreme, he expects to be treated with deference and respect. It is the Service's official policy to extend him all reasonable curtesies.
