Gremlins Ethnicity in Brocéliande | World Anvil

Gremlins

Gremlins are a type of fae, not so unlike boggarts and trow and are thought to be relatives of the Sciuridae Nesta - Guardians of the Mountains, a squirrel-like creature that lives along the sacred mountains of Gaia, sometimes known as the spine. Both species are highly capable and distantly related to the more-common boggarts and brownies, differing partly in the heavy coat of fur but also in the special anti-magic field that both Nesta and Gremlins are able to produce. Gremlins may even be the same species, as both are highly reclusive, the only known differences being that Gremlins love contraptions of all kinds, while Nesta prefer to stay on their beloved mountains where their anti-magic has protected them from magical assault, while leveraging the cold and in-hospitality of the mountains to help protect sacred areas from incursion.
They have a variety of forms from thin fingered, to heavy handed, and are often very hairy in colder climates. Their noses and often four-legged gait make them less humanoid than most fae, but ask any Grelmin, and they'll tell you that's a good thing.
The Gremlin population of Dream city is much like many Gremlin populations. they are little heard of and even less likely to be seen, and yet they work at the behest of  stronger powers.Remember the Great Gremlin strike of 1892. Or maybe not, it was over fifty years ago now. The Gremlins fighting for better pay and working conditions downed tools and streamed up into the top of the famous cloud city. There were concerted efforts to get the gremlins back to work. Most especially by the giants and bosses who rely on the Gremlin's ability to safely operate machinery to run the expensive and temperamental equipment necessary to catch and refine dreams.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Due to their secretive nature, little is known of the Gremlin culture. They could be literally be having orgies within the complex clockwork and wind operated mechanisms of Dream city and nobody would know. Few anthropologists have even tried to study the culture, in stark contrast to the many studies undertaken of the "Finders" and other groups of humanoid creatures below a foot in height.
"You cannot compare the study of Finders to that of Gremlins, as it is not simply an anthropomorphic bias, but one of convenience as almost all the studied populations of Finders live right dab smack in the middle of the Library of Alexandria. It's simply a matter of convenience and academic laziness."
"It's all very well to mention that most studies of Finders are right dab smack in the middle of the Library of Alexandria, but there is also a large population of Gremlins within the library, and they have never been studied."
"Not wishing to be studied, so as not to be further persecuted is also a reason."
And so the debate rolls on, and all to the effect that nobody has made the time or effort to properly study Gremlin culture, although from historical records, it's thought that Gremlins once ruled the skies, and it is in fact humans that have forced them into smelly, loud, noisy jobs deep within Dream City, the Library of Alexandria, or gone off Brocielande to one of the clockwork, or steampunk worlds they are so fond of. Now, what you may ask is so special about Gremlin culture? And we would love to answer that question we truly would.
We can ask, do they have the religious festivals of the Nesta or the singing voices of lineage as recited by the fae of underdark? Or some other fae attributes and all you will receive is silence as after being oppressed for centureis they have no time or inclination to answer human questions
Are they big on pretending that bread is made of bodies and insist that all sanctified bread carries at least a trace of poison? All these questions and more are yet to be answered. But what we can say categorically is that Gremlin society greatly revers the alchemists, stonemasons, seamsters*, woodworkers and inventors.

*In the dark ages seamsters would have been called seamstresses. But lets face it, men are every bit as good at sewing as anyone else, excepting of course, the great Arachne herself, and have insisted on the recognition they're rightly due.
