The Choir of Being

Healing of the Body

The fighters met, the Ancestor driving his blade deep in a soldiers chest. The man shuddered, twitching as the sword slid from the wound with ease. His body fell to the ground, and the enemy continued their charge. Dauson was quick to act, rushing forward to the bleeding body. A radiant white vapor poured from his hands, bathing the wounds. Dauson placed his fingertips on the man's chest. He strained, granting as he tried to pull his fingers off. The man arched his back, as if Dauson was lifting the man up. The blood receeded, Dauson's fingers living off the body as the sleep neared completion. Dauson then raised his hand, curled into a fist. Electric light sparked between the fingers as the wounds sealed. Dauson screamed and brought his fist down on the soldiers chest. The sparks flew, causing the body to culvulse as each nerve sprang to life. Dauson smiled down at the man, who's eyes shot open after a deep gasp of air.
Duson helped the man up, handed him his weapons, and shouted to bolster his spirit, "You're not dead until I say so."
The choir of being is one of three branches in Arcana Renovatio. The focus is much more straightforward, centering around healing and protection of the physical body. Display how straightforward it may seem that is arguably the most complex of the three branches. It requires the most knowledge to successfully use, in particular it needs an in-depth understanding of anatomy and biology.   Those who practice this branch must know how the body works in order to heal it. Physical damage can be the most difficult to heal due to outlying factors most wouldn't think about. They have to take various issues into account before sealing a wound such as whether blood has intruded where it doesn't belong, or sterilizing the area of the wound itself to prevent infection.

Diagnosis

Those who study this branch of the genre tend to focus much of their time toward scientific and medical study. These mages are, to the respect and quiet disdain of many professionals who do not use magic, more than qualified for scientific and medical practice. These mages have identified hundreds of distinct medical conditions and their treatments. The use of magic to heal is often considered a last resort, as it fails to utilize the methods that nature has already put in place. They even forego using magic for the purposes of experimentation for new treatments, falling back to Magic should the experiments fail to the point where the patient doesn't have long to live. Of course, this is voluntary... in most parts of the world.     Despite their many advances, there are plenty of species that don't benefit from the genre. Creatures with more exotic biology unknown to the caster cannot be subjected to Arcane Operation. Most creatures native to the casters homeland can, however.

Modern Medicine?

You may notice that there are references to things that are more indicative of modern medicine then what you would expect from a world inspired by the Medieval Era and The Renaissance. With their magic, as well as their naturally inquisitive minds, Arcanists have made great strides in medicine and science.

While their are things that remain elusive, such as the discovery of penicilin and antibiotics (1928 in the real world.) they are a little more advanced than their historical inspiration... at least in part.

Don't forget that in 1590, Zacharius Jannssen invented the microscope and as far back as ancient Egypt, (That's 2600 BC, by the way.) Imhotep describes the diagnosis and treatment of 200 diseases including tuberculosis, appendicitis, gout, gallstones, and arthritis.
