Ka'a Leke
Heart of the community

The leke in the settlement of Ka'a on Eusakai is the only permanent building on the islands. It serves as a community space, containing the village's only kitchen and hearth, as well as room for the whole village to dine together. In practice, this rarely happens except on special occasions.
It was built almost two hundred years ago with wood and stone brought over the frozen ocean from Ilwyrika.
Leke is the Ilwyrikan word for 'home' or 'nest', and shares a root with the word for 'heart'.
Fascinating! Why did they choose to build this one permanent structure but no others?
It's mostly the difficulty of bringing the raw materials over to make more permanent buildings, but also symbolically it is the permanent centre of community.
