Runic Network

The Runic Network is a system of communication designed to be used by members of Arcanum Noctus as a way to communicate in secret without leaving behind a clear paper trail that would indicate pieces of our organisation.   When it was first created, it was clear that the basis of the runic network were devised before the Oldfront Empire. The magik or the wild years is very unstable and as a result had to be harnessed and adapted before it was able to be fully used. It was Warden Talis Vale who was able to first utilise the Runic Network and produce a message that was transferred into the mind of another Warden.   It was in 1856 that the first permanent Runic Network was set up to produce consistent messaging between Wardens. It was fairly rudamental but it connected several Wardens together. However, there were several times that the messages between each member of the network were unintelligable and it led, unfortunately, to the death of a Warden.
The Runic Network is highly important to the running of Arcanum. It allows us to ensure every member is informed, whilst keeping the infromation hidden.

The Messages

I thought it would be pertanent to share with you what the messages look and sound like. The messages are written in the language of Runic and appear in the eye of the mind. This means that there are no words spoken that can be understood by an outisde force, instead the message is shown as an image in your mind. This is one of the primary reasons why each Warden is forced to understand Runic, even if its only with the purpose of understanding messages.   When I personally receieve a message it usually starts with a single word that indicates the purpose of the message. In the case of an urgent request the rune representing the word Kavrai will appear, which indicates an urgent emergency, the details of which would follow. Otherwise some examples of these first words are as follows:
  • Mathri - new mission for a collective.
  • Coranu - a member of Arcanum has died with the ranking of warden or higher.
  • Uzhia - an event has occured that requires your attention.
If a message starts without a singular word, it is often assumed to be background information that has occured due to the slightly unstable nature of the magik involved in the creation of the Networks. However, if someone is named directly in a message it has one of two meanings, either their position and the Networks have been discovered and they are in imminent danger, or they are in line for a promotion (or demotion) from the upper members of Arcanum. While the former can be an immediate threat, the latter is either a moment of celebration or deflation, depending on the context.

Known Runic Networks

Across the Orders of Arcanum Noctus there are at least 12 known Networks that link over twenty Wardens to each other in need of emergency and also to start assigning missions to the collectives they are leading at the time.   The most prominent Network is known as Coralith Major. This Network is designated to act as a general system across a larger number of Wardens at all times. This means that Coralith Major is, in most cases, the primary network used by members of Arcanum Noctus, especially when relating information about possible missions and especially strange events that require the attention of Collectives and Wardens, usually from Archivists.   The secondary Network is known as Massi Vallen. The core tenant of Massi Vallen is to work as a channel for members of Ex Veritasium to hold information that would need to be communicated directly to Archivists as it would provide a clear direct system of information. It is known that Architects can use Massi Vallen to inform Members of Ex Veritasium of the new inventions so they can be archived correctly and can also be dispersed out to the correct Warden. Members of other orders have used Massi Vallen in the case of a major disturbance or injury to a collective containing a member of Ex Veritasium, usually to try to protect them from a disasterous consequence.   The third and final of the prominent Networks is known only as The Voidspeech, this is due to some of strange interference that has been picked up in the messages sent through it, with strange runes that are completely unusual to even the most adept Wardens. However, in the case of emergency or very particular circumstances surrounding the eldritch entities that have been written about particularly surrounding the introduction of Weird and Magik into the realm. In the worst case scenario, the Voidspeech is determined to be the point of communication between any members of Arcanum and the entities, as it may provide a way to reduce potential disaster throughout the course of the realm.

This is a great form of communication. I love that different words are used as an initial indicator of tone.
