Władysław Szpilman

Władysław Szpilman was a Polish pianist and classical composer of Jewish descent who became widely known through the publication of his autobiography "The Pianist," which describes his survival through World War II in occupied Warsaw. His life story was the basis for the Academy Award-winning film "The Pianist" directed by Roman Polanski. Szpilman's music career was interrupted by the war, but he resumed it after the war as a concert pianist and composer, becoming a prominent figure in Polish radio.
