Louis XVI (LOO-ee)
King of France
Louis-Auguste (a.k.a. Louis XVI)
Louis XVI, born Louis-Auguste, was the last King of France before the fall of the monarchy during the French Revolution. He ascended to the throne in 1774 and initially showed a willingness to implement necessary reforms and support the American Revolution. However, his indecisiveness and conservatism led him to oppose revolutionary reforms, which contributed to the radicalization of the Revolution. In 1792, he was deposed, and the First French Republic was proclaimed. Louis XVI was tried by the National Convention, found guilty of conspiracy, and executed by guillotine in 1793.
