Hugh Williams (Hyoo WILL-yuhms)
A Survivor
Hugh Williams (a.k.a. Stormborne)
Hugh Williams was born in Anglesey, Wales, to a family of fishermen. His first experience at sea began early, and by age 10, he was already lending a hand on his father’s boat. In 1728, Hugh survived his first shipwreck near the Menai Strait. He clung to a piece of driftwood and was rescued hours later, shaken but alive. This close brush with death would be the first of many, each time reinforcing his family's belief that he was destined for a peculiar fate.
Over the years, Hugh would go on to survive several more shipwrecks, each seemingly more harrowing than the last. His second encounter came in 1746, off the coast of North Wales. Then in 1762, another wreck struck near the Isle of Man, and once again, he emerged as the sole survivor, gaining an almost mythical reputation among sailors. This reputation became both a badge of honor and an eerie warning, and some even saw Hugh as a man blessed by the sea’s favor—or cursed by its relentless pursuit.
In his later years, weary of the sea's unpredictable nature, Hugh settled inland in Shropshire, where he became a quiet farmer. Despite his many brushes with death at sea, his life ended peacefully, far from the waters that had shaped his legend.
