Charles Babbage (CHARLZ BAB-ij)

English Mathematician and Inventor

Charles Babbage

Charles Babbage was an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer who is best known for originating the concept of a programmable computer. Considered a "father of the computer," Babbage is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer that eventually led to more complex designs. His most notable achievements include the design of the 'Difference Engine' and the more complex 'Analytical Engine,' which had an arithmetic logic unit, basic flow control, and integrated memory. Though neither machine was completed in his lifetime, Babbage's ideas were the precursor to the modern digital computer.
