Arsène Lupin (ar-SEHN loo-PAHN)

The Gentleman Thief

Arsène Raoul Lupin

Born to a minor noblewoman and rumored to be the illegitimate son of a diplomat, Arsène Lupin grew up in the shadowy halls of fading aristocracy and the glittering streets of Belle Époque Paris. Educated in fencing, philosophy, and sleight of hand, Lupin spent his early adulthood reinventing himself across Europe—sometimes a nobleman, sometimes a valet, always five steps ahead. Arrested at least four times before 25, he escaped each one in more theatrical fashion than the last.   While the newspapers spun tales of his burglaries and disguises, what they missed was his code. Lupin never stole from the poor or the innocent; he delighted in robbing the corrupt, the cruel, and the wealthy elite who thought themselves untouchable. To him, theft was both art and justice—a chance to embarrass those who confused status with virtue.   By the time Maurice Leblanc turned him into a fictional hero, Lupin had already become a myth in French society. The public adored him. The police loathed him. And the League? They needed him.

League Member Note

Dates Active in League: 1903-1918

Lupin joined the League after an elaborate heist in Cairo led to the accidental unraveling of a League covert operation. Rather than reprimand him, the League offered him a deal: help finish the mission he disrupted, and perhaps earn a seat at the table. He accepted—with flair—and finished the job *better* than the team originally assigned.   During his time with the League, Lupin became both a wildcard and a specialist. Need access to an impossible vault? Lupin already has the blueprints. Need to impersonate a Prussian count? He’s been doing it for a week. His talents in infiltration, disguise, and social manipulation proved invaluable in missions involving espionage, magical forgeries, and relic recovery. He frequently partnered with Archie Ackley and Jo March, though his playful arrogance made him both admired and infuriating.   In 1918, Lupin vanished after sabotaging a secret auction of mystical artifacts in occupied Belgium. His final message to the League was a blank calling card and the words “Je vous en prie, retirez-moi avec style.” (""Please, retire me with style."") Though presumed dead, sightings continued for decades. The League maintains a file on him, labeled only:
**Status: Open**.
