Way of the Dealer

They used to say that a salesman's true home was on the road, and that's truer than ever these days. The folks with the money to buy goods are few and far between, leaving a heck of a lot of roads for traders to travel. True, one could always try to make a living trading with the independent folk who live in the desolate outlands, but it wouldn't be a very good living. To make money, a dealer needs to go to where the money is, in the Cities. Ration script – Water-bills and Fuel-bills and dozens of other ration credits, issued by each City. The value of trading in some salvaged scrap and a truckload of grain for a handful of Ration Scrip is always worth the risk of transporting those goods through the bandit-infested outlands. True, many dealers never make it to their destinations alive if they travel the wildlands alone. The truth is, if you have a great deal on the line, you have suddenly a lot of friends, some who want to help, others that just want a piece of the action. It’s hard to tell which is which. But then, no one ever said it was easy for a dealer to get rich...

Trader/Bartermeister

Everything has a price, and the Bartermeister not only knows what it is, but he or she has also already calculated its relative trade equity, his percentage, and the flooring cost of keeping it as long as he has. While arguably more forthright than some 'men of business" on this list, the Trader as he is also known does bear some respectability. Generally a 'word is his bond" the Barterman will rarely offer a price that is going to break him, and only rarely will he avail him of a trade that is onerous to his clients.   Bartermeisters, on principle, will rarely deal with material whose value is suspect, or that might lose value (or, for that matter, gain value) rapidly. So the Rarity of an item you seek will often price the Trader right out of the negotiation. As such, the Barter/Trader that isn't of the adventure group is most likely going to become, at least at some point, an RPC, or eventually an Ally to the Cadre.

Salesman/Merchant

Buy an Item. Sell an Item. Sales folk are not known for sticking to a job, a community, or even a line of product. As the most flighty of dealers, Merchants are a fairly ubiquitous route for Persona to follow, with credible person skills, not to mention a plethora of actionable skills, given the widely varied kinds and types of sales they may have participated in over their years.

Gambler/Swindler

The chase. The 'big score' is just around the next corner. IF a life of unbridled excitement draws your attention then this Wayward type might appeal to you. The gains can be spectacular, the losses stunning, and in the meantime, so many adventures.

Con artist/Grifter

"Brother, can you spare a dime?" A pauper with a heart of gold, a confidence-man with some ocean-front property to sell. Flim-flam man or sincere overpromising 'unhealthy Optomist'  the shady side of sincerity works for the Grifter. There is a charm about these kinds of playboy-rogue-drifters, and that usually spells danger one way or another.

Speakster/Voicebox

You will nearly always see the Speakster hawking his wares, hawking his skills, hawking just about anything that isn't nailed down. Masters of monologue, dialogue, and crowd control when necessary, the Voicebox is often the 'Front Man of a Cadre, the "answer man" when things go wrong, and the "advocate of choice" when things go right.  Now, if you could, just speak into the microphone.

Lawyer/Politician

Rules are sometimes your friend, and other times, a boat anchor. A Politician has the skill to 'work the problem' of doing what needs be done, and massage the policies, tariffs, and taxes. Maybe you need a new law created to allow someone to carry a concealed weapon. Maybe you need to get bailed out of a Pokey. The Lawyer is your huckleberry.

Actor/Charlatan

People pretend to be other people all the time, but the Actor is the very best. Perhaps he has Method Acting down and can switch one personality on and off. Perhaps more the character actor, and can disappear in a crowd, so changed from himself as to be indistinguishable. Or maybe he just fools himself and does so with a Pesrsonability bigger than the world stage. In any case, the Actor knows his craft, if not his place in the world.

Breaker

A combination of a pawnbroker and a “knee-breaker” (loan shark), Breakers are the negotiators, the gatekeepers of transactions between the ravagers of the roadways, ruins, and byways and the more civilized Trade Zones, Sprawl Zones, and the Arcologies themselves. Sophistication rises with proximity to the Metroplexes, as do interest rates and reduced repayment windows. Breakers make great resources on tracking stolen or black-box resources, but danger rises with too much dependence upon them. (Dealers can develop into Breakers if they put down roots and collect physical resources)
