Session 12: The Depths of the Great Plains Report

General Summary

The party broke camp early in the morning, they had noticed a large creature pass them during the night that they had identified as a smaller Titanaboa. They also gained intelligence on a goblin scouting party that had passed them by, apparently noticed their camp but didn't dare to come close according to one of the skull sentries that Iceworn had put out. The group gathered up the essentials of their campsite and left promptly that morning in search of the ruined campsite that they heard rumors about.   Kya had no problems locating the camp but they were met with an unsettling and confusing scene. A few broken-down wagons, some wreckage, and damage that was consistent with a goblin attack. The signature tactic of a goblin ambush was present, wagon wheels cracked across the centerpiece. However, there were things inconsistent with goblin attacks, such as a purse of gold left on the ground in plain sight and the fact that the tracks in the area were in a neat, single-file line into the camp and out of the camp. These details confused the party and they did some searching for undead and residues of magic, with some careful searching they found pieces of a scattered document that depicted the outline of a Hydra though it meant little to them at the time. They discovered one wagon was completely free of debris, wreckage and seemed to have been handled much more carefully from the others and they found the residue of a type of magic used in the act of sacrificing a soul. This explained the fact that there was no residual aura of death that Iceworn could detect.   From there the party decided to return to their original trail and track down the Titanaboa that had passed their camp during the night. Kya was able to track down the beast rather handily to a clearing with a lot of trampled down traveler's grass that let the sunlight pour in through the canopy that towered above. She stopped the group at the edge of the clearing and Reinys used some magic to allow her to speak with animals, they called out to the creature and attempted to reason with it while the other three party members spread out. While the titanic snake seemed rather willing to speak to them it did not wish to reveal its hiding place but placed pointed questions to Reinys and Kya that asked for the number of companions with them and their positions. After determining exactly where the snake was because it had crept close into a striking position under the trampled grass, but after determining where it was Iceworn used an illusion to mimic the sound of a predator that the snake would fear. The snake coiled in on itself and then the party attacked. No one was devoured but the battle was gruesome and left the party beaten down. They quickly harvested some of the thick hide of the snake and Squall took care to dispatch a pair of goblin scouts that had come to check out the noise of the battle. Then they made for the edge of the depths where they could return to the road and the city of Kestle for some much-needed rest behind high stone walls.
