Term: Attack Modifier

When making an Attack roll or Spell Attack the Attack Modifier is added after the 1d20 roll. This modifier is determined by the kind of attack, which determines which Attribute is used. After the Attribute, the Proficiency Bonus of the attacking creature is added.

After the result of the attack roll is determined, one uses the Attribute of the Attack Modifier for damage.

For example, with a level 3 character using a Dagger (1d4) with +4 to their Physical attributes, and +3 to their Mental attributes:

  • Melee, Thrown⚙️, and attacks that use Strength
    • 1d20+2+4= 1d20+6
  • Ranged⚙️, Thrown⚙️, Finesse⚙️, and attacks that use Dexterity
    • 1d20+2+4= 1d20+6
  • Attacks that use Constitution
    • 1d20+2+4= 1d20+6
  • Keen⚙️ and attacks that use Intelligence
    • 1d20+2+3= 1d20+5
  • Zen⚙️ and attacks that use Wisdom
    • 1d20+2+3= 1d20+5
  • Attacks that use Charisma
    • 1d20+2+3= 1d20+5
