Proficiency is an innate modifier all creatures possess, based on their Character Level or Threat Level. Proficiency itself is 1/2 level, rounded up. There is also Expertise (full character level, mimicking Pathfinder 2e's proficiency rules) and Half-Proficiency (1/4 level, rounded up, mimicking traditional proficiency).
Proficiency is used in almost every aspect of the game.
Proficiency, or a Proficiency Bonus, is a scaling statistic that equals half a creature's level. For every odd character level, you round up to the nearest whole. Having it for a certain aspect of the game is called being 'trained in', or 'proficiency in' such (e.g., being
trained in Athletics. Having proficiency in
Simple Weapons.
Players will be asked to add this to the result of many rolls, including
1d20 rolls for attacks, skills, etc. It will also be added to many features and other rules the game uses, such as those that have specific uses per
Swift,
Short, or
Long Rests.
You will be asked to add this to the result of a roll and, sometimes, another number or two. The table below will give an idea of what is expected with the Proficiency Bonus.

There are two other forms of Proficiency Bonus: Expertise and Half-Proficiency.
Expertise uses your full character level for the value that would use Half-Proficiency. It is primarily used for Skills, but certain features and abilities will add it other things, such as Frenzied Rage for Barbarians.
Half Proficiency is a creature's character level divided by 4 rounded up, or 1/4th their character level. The table below can be used as quick guide for examples.
