Item Description

This small, strange book may appear like another other unused Log Book, if a little worn and dog eared. It can easily be carried in one hand, and its pages are few, but tellingly indestructible.

To those who attune to the book, however, it transforms into an item that tells of countless stories, of spells, events, places, and effects from all walks of life, and all manner of being. From humble wanderers of simpler paths, to deities, archdemons, and dragons that have lived for years beyond count. In this regard, the book becomes a window to a grander scale, possibly physically transforming to the holders' whim. To this end, the becomes a Grand Library Log to those deemed worthy and/or curious.

As a Grand Library Log, the book grants its user magical abilities, as well as granting access to a widen variety of knowledge. At the start of an adventuring day (after completing a Long Rest), the creature attuned may pick a number of skills equal to their proficiency bonus. For that (or until they complete another Long Rest), they gain proficiency with those skills if they do not have such. If they already have proficiency, they may gain Expertise in that skill instead. If they already have Expertise, they may gain a bonus dice (base d4).

Once per Long Rest, they may concentrate on the book as an ◈. Doing so pulls the creature's mind into the shared collective all Grand Library Logs have, making them able to pull from all sorts of resources in first hand accounts, however it is visualized to them. Once done, the next 1d20 roll the user makes is one degree of success better no matter the result (Critical Failure to Failure, Failure to Success, Success to Critical Success(s).

  • Alternatively, at the GM's discretion, if the creature using the Log is one that has a feature that uses Log Books, the creature may instead use such to fill out the log with information they themselves do not possess (a spell a Wizard does not have, a Locale a Ranger does not know of, a weapon an Engineer does not have etc). Doing so also requires a relevant check, with a DC of 10 + the relevant modifiers.

Finally, the book acts as as a Casting Foci, and a point of connection that can be targeted by abilities for communication, such as Message, regardless of distance or planar boundaries. The book can also be used as a Log Book with infinite pages, for the relevant features that require such.

Anything written in the log is also recorded in the Grand Library, where the information is stored both as an ongoing narrative collected as a story of that Walker’s life and separated out and sorted into its various topics for research purposes. A Grand Library Log cannot be crafted by normal means. Often, it must be found or spirited away from books or Orders of knowledge.

Destruction

A Grand Library Log may be destroyed by writing a blatant falsehood in it, then shelving it or putting it away amongst another collection of books. The book comes unbound, then shrivels into dust before blowing away on a phantom wind.
