Sapere aude, you should never stop learning. — Breck
In the known world, there are 6 types of
Magic users. These magic users are very different and thus Guilds were formed to protect the interest of each type of magic user.
Everyone who can do magic is expected to join one of them. Even if the person doesn't plan on working as a
Mage they are there as silent members.
History
There is no written information on the origin of the guilds, but it is believed that they grew alongside the development of the six types of magic.
Around 5500 years ago the earliest forms of writing appeared on Earth and it took the people of Breck’s Haven a couple of hundered years to adopt a couple of the writing systems and create their own. The records of the guild's histories started to be written down around 4000 years ago. A couple of the guilds haven’t changed that much during the last 5000 years...
Hierarchy
The hierarchy and government is different within each guild, but they all have one leader and one vice-leader. These leaders are also called different things within the guilds.
For example in
The Key the higest ranked Wizard is the
Archwizard and the Vice-Archwizard is the second in command. Members within this guild votes on who they want to have as a leader while in
The Pentagram and
The Hand the strongest magic user is the leader.
Conflict
There are many conflicts both between the Guilds and within them.
The most known conflict among the inhabiants of Haven is the "demon conflict" between
The Pentagram and
The Hand. The Pentagram loathes the demons and wants to eradicate them from existence. It is the purpose of the guilds to protect the world from the creatures of the Astral Planes, however, the
The Hand makes contracts with the demons from the Astral Planes and protects them.
I'm not sure what I think about this...— Breck
