Ona Omar to the Count of Barcelona

SUMMER CAMP WARNING!

This is a Summer Camp article! It was written quickly with little planning, and if you see this message, it means it hasn't gone through a proper revision yet. It might be missing important content, contain wonky phrasing, or have odd formatting.
In early 1885, King Rafael III, Count of Barcelona and Lord of the Sea, wrote a letter in secret to Ona Omar, a researched in the field of arcanurgy. Her research is related to the Ancients, as well as to discover ways to perform arcanurgy far from one of the Statues.   Due to the high strategic value this research could have, the King wanted to have control over the research and prevent her from publishing it in exchange for additional funding. In her reply, Ona rejects his request.

Author's Notes

Thanks for reading! This one was a bit hard to figure out, but once I had the idea it I really liked it. I love the concept of a character opposing a figure of authority not for a disagreement in political opinions but out of sheer love for science. It's made me more excited to develop the character of Ona and she might become a major NPC in my next campaign!

I love Ona. I bet the king wasn't too happy with that answer.

Eh, he's used to it at this point lol. The king has political power, but it's not absolute power. With most things, he can also politely request (or veto), but not order.

Short and sweet. I also love the idea of someone opposing an authority figure for the love of science and study, especially because I'm seeing this kind of thing happen in the real world where I live. Good for Ona.

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .

Yeah, I love it too! I'm used to making characters for my campaigns that are badass because of their power or skills, probably because they're easier to communicate to my players. But I like the idea of someone's "badassery"(?) coming from just a strong personality that doesn't let itself be swayed by mere authority.
