Mediterranean Crown

Corona mediterrània
The Mediterranean Crown is a composite monarchy located in southern Europe and northern Africa. United under the common rule of the Lord of the Sea, its constituent countries are one of the strongest powers in Europe. The Crown is the modern successor of the Crown of Aragon, with significantly expanded borders largely due to the Mediterranean Expansion Campaign. Lately, though, the source of their power has been progressively switching from military to commercial, thanks in no small part to their almost uncontested dominion over the Mediterranean Sea.

Structure and governance

As a composite monarchy, the constituent countries of the Crown have their own individual constitutions and political organization. For example, the Monarch can't promulgate new laws without the consent of the local governments, and viceversa. There are, however, some actions that the Monarch can take without local consent:
  • Declare a state of emergency. In practice, the Monarch will always consult with the local governments if time allows to ensure their collaboration in the emergency.
  • Mobilize the Mediterranean Army. The army of each country reserves a specific percentage of their troops to serve the Monarch's orders at a moment's notice. In a state of emergency, the Monarch can take up to 50% of each country's army, and local government can consent to higher percentages.
  • Collect taxes. Each country has their own tax system, but a percentage of the collected taxes goes to the Monarch.
  • Resolve disputes. When there is conflict between two constituent countries, the Monarch intervenes, ideally without the use of force. This is done through the Royal Audience, which also handles appeals to sentences by lower courts.
  • Foreign relations. Individual countries are allowed to carry out their own diplomatic relationships with countries external to the Crown. However, the Monarch and their ambassadors are the sole representative of the Crown as a whole and can override the foreign policy of individual countries.
Barcelona, as the capital of the first contituent country, acts as the de facto capital city of the Crown. However, the Monarch has an official residence in each country's capital, where they can hold court and perform any other government businesses.

Currency

All countries in the Crown use a common currency: the golden florí and its subdividions, which have the following equivalences:
  • 1 gold florí = 12 silver sous
  • 1 sou = 12 copper rals
  • 1 ral = 12 billon ardits
San Marino isn't part of the Crown, but also uses the florí as its official currency. Additionally, it's also accepted in the Papal States and Malta.   Within the Crown, the florí is used as the only currency everywhere except in the Castellany of Amposta (Catalonia), where it coexists with the scudo of the Order of Malta. All coins have a standard face, while the tails depend on the country where it's been coined.
Current personal coat of arms of the Lord of the Sea, which is also used to represent the Mediterranean Crown.

xDDD   The Crown of Aragon did marry to Castile in this world. The Mediterranean Crown appeared in 1713 when France (in this timeline) conquered half of the Iberian peninsula and most of what was left of Spain was the old Crown of Aragon, so they rebranded and went back to the "old ways" so to speak.

Really interesting. I don't know enough about history to know how it differs from real life (tm), but I definitely enjoyed the read. I really like the little country tidbits. :D

Thanks for reading! It differs a lot, the Mediterranean Crown never existed in real life (it's just based on something that did). My goal is not to create a realistic alternate history—I don't have the knowledge nor research time for that—, but just one that I find cool and fun to work with!

Love the flags. Great way to show that the countries are interconnected.

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .

Thank you! Yes, putting them together was fun, and it's a great way to "show don't tell"! I'm super obsessed with the flag of the Republic of Venice—it was a mess to edit, but it's just beautiful.

Excellent article! Not only does it look clean, but it provides all the information necessary to understand the Crown's territory, political powers, and consituent states in a simple manner.

Thanks for reading! I couldn't get to everything I wanted to write about before Summer Camp ended (a summary of history), but I'm pretty happy with it (especially with all the heraldry :D)
