Veiled Whispers
Everyone watched the slender acrobat showcasing her skills in the marketplace. Her movements were as light as a dance, while her gaze tirelessly roamed over her audience, and even her fingers seemed to perform an intricate dance. Her leaps resembled a cat's as she gracefully twirled and finally landed back on the ground, pointing in a direction and sinking to the ground. Everyone watched her.
No one noticed that in that direction a trader sank silently to the ground. No one heard the soft gasp from the young woman next to him before she was pulled into the shadows. The artist distracted everyone from the quick steps with which both - kidnapper and victim - disappeared into the night. When it was noticed and you turned back to her, she was gone. Swallowed by the night, as is her secret partner.
The “Veiled Whispers“ is a powerful, silent language that is practiced in the dark alleys and crumbling parts of Ravenspire. This sinister form of communication is used by a secretive cult following the “Veiled Master”, to communicate without words and hide their plans from curious ears, which are present everywhere in the city.
Veiled Whispers comprises a variety of subtle gestures, glances and symbols used to communicate without the usage of words. These elements, but especially their combination, are only understandable to those also proficient in the language. Followers of the Veiled Master’s cult are specialists in disguise and use these forms of communications to avoid the authorities within the city, as well as the church inquisition haunting them.
But Veiled Whispers are not only used by cultists. It spread into the circles of spies and agents of other malevolent organizations, acting within the city, and hiding their plans and intrigue from those listening. But even if this language is an efficient way to communicate, it’s also dangerous. The increased activity of the cult, especially during the last month, put the Raven Guard on alert – and even the slightest mistake could easily lead to a captured cultist.
The society of Ravenspire is not aware of the existence of Veiled Whispers, though. They are wondering how such abductions, like those performed by the cultists, could ever be planned. While the cultists are still using their secret language, the Raven Guard slowly gets an idea that there must be some kind of communication in this, and whenever they find runes at places, they have specialists working on them. So it’s only a matter of time until the secrets become unveiled.
