Shimmerwings
Shimmerwings were a rare, ethereal species of magical beings. Some researchers would state that these creatures belonged to the fairies, but that’s not true. Shimmerwings were a manifestation of the pure magic found in Baeleris. When civilization spread over the world, the Shimmerwings disappeared. Today, the species is extinct. The last exemplars disappeared about one hundred years ago.
Basic Information
Anatomy
At first glance, Shimmerwings could easily be mistaken for a butterfly, but there are some major differences in appearance. The Shimmerwings were about 15cm long, with a wingspan that could easily measure up to 45cm. The body resembled that of a butterfly, but was covered in iridescent scales that reflected the light. Their wings were translucent, showcasing a mesmerizing pattern of bright, gemstone-like colors. They had six delicate legs and two pairs of antennae. Scholars think that one pair was used to navigate the physical world, while the second one was used to detect magic.
Ecology and Habitats
As far as science can tell today, Shimmerwings inhabited forests and groves of Mortavia and other continents. It seems like they preferred regions with high natural beauty and extensive levels of natural magic floating around. Today, the regions where exemplars were documented and remains of them were found count as gateways towards the fairy realms. These locations feed the theory that Shimmerwings were actually fae, and didn’t die but return to the fairy realms when Baeleris became too hostile for the creatures.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Since Shimmerwings disappeared long ago, there is not much information about the sensory capabilities of the species. Scholars guess the species could navigate both the material world and the astral plane, or the magic overlay of the world. They are not sure if the species had eyes, though. At this point, consent is that the species did not rely on physical senses to navigate the world.
