Spirits

Every single living thing in the universe of Babikiye possesses a concentration of spiritual energy. This concentration of spiritual energy is commonly referred to as one's Spirit. It is believed that a living thing attains sophonce because of the strength of their Spirit compared to, say, a common flower.   Whether sophont or a flower, the incorporeal spirit and the corporeal body work in tandem to bless a creature with the gift of not just life, but consciousness. Physicality is the realm of the body. The body provides living things with the ability to interact with the people and space surrounding it. The spirit, meanwhile, is responsible for providing living things with their consciousnesses, including details such as one's personality and memories. The spirit of a sophont is uniquely heightened in this regard.   The spirit is also responsible for any special abilities, if a person happens to possess them. At their core, special abilities are a sophont's ability to use their spirit to manipulate the "spiritual energy" within and around them.

Types of Spirits

There are five types of spirits defined by the relationship between the spirit and the body of the creature. While a living thing is capable of being entirely spiritual in nature, it is impossible for a living thing to be entirely corporeal. Those are objects, meaning that they are not alive to begin with and thus are excluded from the conversation here.

Mostly Corporeal

In most living things, the body is stronger than the spirit. In these creatures, however, the body dominates entirely over the spirit. These are usually creatures who were born in some way, developed first within seed, egg, and/or their mother's womb. Most living things exist in this category. They include just about anything that isn't a sophont creature.

The exact balance between their corporeal forms and their spirits varies from creature to creature. Their spirit may change over time, as well. Ancient trees are more spiritually potent than saplings, for example.

Body First, Spirit Second: the Start of Sophonce

In most living things, the body is stronger than the spirit. At this level, however, the spirit is able to exert itself reliably. These living things are, essentially, "body-first, spirit-second." These are usually creatures who were born in some way, developed first within egg or their mother's womb.   All Awassi, Henin, Hewas, and Astris peoples are "body-first, spirit-second" sophonts. The main trait that each of these species share that contribute to their comportment is that they are born directly from the bodies of their parents.

Spirit First, Body Second

Living things that are "spirit-first and body-second" are rare in comparison. They are almost exclusively found on the planet of Aravu. Most were not born, but created in some way.   For example, the Ida purposefully creates a Yashelin's spirit first and then provides it with a body to inhabit. The Fas, meanwhile, are a sophont byproduct of the excess spiritual energy required to power the Yashelin's magitech-based society. They possess bodies, sort of, but their spirit is much more defining than their corporeal form.

Delicate Balance: Reincarnations

Reincarnations are the only known living creatures capable of breaching the barrier between the above two types entirely. For example, Reincarnations who were born to body-first, spirit-second parents possess a similar, though more balanced, comportment as their parents until they die.   After their death, their spirit takes over the leading role. They still possess a hearty corporeal form, however. The only exception are Reincarnations who are also Yashelin, in which case they follow those guidelines instead.

Spirits and Little Else: the Afterlife

Kivrian sophonts are provided with an Afterlife upon their deaths, when their spirit separates from their body. They are more spirit than anything else, with only the finest veneer of a corporeal form with which they can interact with one another.   As such, a spirit from the afterlife may only be returned to the "land of the living" with such extreme care, risking the dissolution of the spirit during any point in the process, that those capable of guiding them forbid the act.

Spirit Only

Many living things experience spirit only existences, if only for the briefest of moments. The split second after a body-first creature's death and their arrival to the afterlife is one such fleeting moment. The Yashelin, meanwhile, may tolerate periods of separation from their bodies if they are under the care of the Ida, but could never achieve such a feat by themselves as they cannot remove themselves from their tether to their corporeal bodies.   Solely spiritual creatures are the rarest living creatures of them all. Many such creatures are hypothesized to exist according to many myths and legends. Only a handful are known. Those that are known have made themselves known by purposefully manipulating the physical realm via whatever special abilities they possess. Who knows how many might be out there without our knowledge?

Really fascinating little article. I love the different ratios of corporeal and spirit, and how that affects things.
