Varga
The country of Varga is a major power situated in the Farath Strait. Formed by local lords who banded together to fight the Croemerth to the north, they have existed for around two hundred years.
The country has only one export: silver. There are four large silver mines inside Varga territory, and each mine has a large settlement built around it. Colloquially, they are known as the Silver Cities. Recently, after the Croemerth invasion, the fifth silver mine in the northernmost region has been lost. It was given to the invaders as spoils of war to prevent further destruction.
Because of the recent defeat, the country is focused on rebuilding what was lost during the war. Many of the Silver Cities have had their defenses fortified, because of the threat of another invasion, Many of the dwarves in the area have been recruited to build walls and gates that could stand up to long sieges.
Structure
The country is lead by the House of Lords, a remnant of the original founding men. Each Member of the House of Lords is from one of the five territories that make up the country. Each territory has a capital, which is the only Silver City in the area. This is where the lord rules his land. Even in the absence of the northernmost city, there are still five lords that make up the government. The lords have no ruler, and every position is treated equally. The odd number means that no vote on policy or such will end in a tie.
The territories are able to make their own policy, and every territory must follow the policy enacted by the House of Lords. The national policy is mostly made up of macro scale matters, like conscription and taxes. Lesser policy is left up to the individual rulers to decide on.
Beneath the lords, the country is made up of lesser nobles that control matters in their territory. There is no mandated structure for this, and some territories have confusing methods of ruling their own land.
Public Agenda
Most of the agenda of the Varga centers around their export of silver. The country only produces what is necessary to mine and sustain miners. Farmers mostly grow crop that can be preserved, meaning it can be stored and brought into the mines with ease. Blacksmiths, while usually focuses on making picks and other mining implements, also make the arms and armour for those who guard the mines and cities.
Because of the focus on silver, many items are imported to the country. This is usually not difficult, as the Great Lake is connected to the country by river. Smaller port settlements take in imports by sea, sending them across the country to their destination. The reliance on trade by sea is the major weakness of the Varga, as any blockade of the country would be crippling.
Assets
The country’s major assets are its silver mines, as everything in Varga relies on that income. Other than silver, the largest assets are the cities built to guard the mines. Because of the recent invasion, most of the Silver Cities are becoming more fortified, as the lost of a mine has made a major dent in the coffers of the country.
