Shimmering Bigfin Squid

Shimmering Bigfin Squid are a peculiar species native to planet Otonan. These squids survive in near-boiling deep-sea oceans and are one of the toughest animals out there.   You will find our squids in the Otonan Sector. Due to the environments we need to cultivate for enclosures, all of Otonan's wildlife are exclusive to this sector.

Quick Facts

COMMON NAME: Shimmering Bigfin Squid   SCIENTIFIC NAME: Magnapinna lucidus   DIET: Small seabed organisms   HABITAT: Deep sea oceans   CONSERVATION STATUS: Endangered   FUN FACT: Shimmering bigfin squid have only been studied a couple of times by people on their native planet, so very little is understood about them.

Anatomy

These squids are unmistakeable, with their shimmering skin and 5 metre long arms and tentacles.

Diet

Shimmering Bigfin Squid drag their arms and tentacles along the seabed, picking up small organisms and eating them.

Habitat

They live on the sea floor, floating around the coldest parts of the oceans, around 80 degrees Celsius.

Behaviour

Little is known about their behaviour, but our squids enjoy floating about in pairs and wrapping their tentacles together.

Support our Squids!

Unfortunately, Shimmering Bigfin Squid are an endangered species. These animals produce thousands of eggs a year, but very few survive. Most eggs boil before being hatched.   Our incubation chambers are at the perfect temperature to ensure the temperature is hot enough for the squids to survive, but not so hot that all the eggs boil. We have a 0.5% hatch rate, which is considerably higher than wild squids.   You can support our squids by donating to our research clinics, dedicated to studying their eggs and increasing the hatch rate!
